Longitudinal strain of epitaxial graphene monolayers on SiC substrates evaluated by z-polarization Raman microscopy

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2019
Longitudinal strains in epitaxial monolayer graphene (EMG) grown on SiC substrates were evaluated by z-polarization Raman microscopy. Due to the covalent bonds formed at the interface between graphene and the substrate, strong compressive strains were ...

Experimental test of connector rotation during DNA packaging into bacteriophage phi29 capsids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The bacteriophage phi29 generates large forces to compact its double-stranded DNA genome into a protein capsid by means of a portal motor complex. Several mechanical models for the generation of these high forces by the motor complex predict coupling of ...

Adaptation of microscopy for studying cell polarization

open access: yes, 2023
Cell polarization, i.e. a spatial difference in the structural organization such as of membrane molecules over the cell, plays an important role in cellular functions.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Spin polarization asymmetry at the surface of chromia

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2014
We demonstrate boundary spin polarization at the surface of a Cr _2 O _3 single crystal using spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy (SPLEEM), complementing prior spin polarized photoemission, spin polarized inverse photoemission, and x-ray ...

Long‐term hippocampal alterations and cognitive impairment in a murine model of surgical sepsis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Using a mouse model of surgical sepsis, we tested long‐term memory and analyzed the transcriptome of single cells isolated from the hippocampus. Survivor mice showed worse memory, loss of certain brain cell subpopulations, and abnormal immune cell activity—suggesting that post‐sepsis brain alterations may be linked to cognitive deficits.

OOPS: Object-Oriented Polarization Software for analysis of fluorescence polarization microscopy images.

open access: yesPLoS Computational Biology
Most essential cellular functions are performed by proteins assembled into larger complexes. Fluorescence Polarization Microscopy (FPM) is a powerful technique that goes beyond traditional imaging methods by allowing researchers to measure not only the ...
