Signatures of spin-charge separation in scanning probe microscopy

open access: yes, 2004
We analyze the effect of an auxiliary scatterer, such as the potential of a scanning tip, on the conductance of an interacting one-dimensional electron system.

Statistical Study of the Corrosion Behavior of Al2CuMg Intermetallics in AA2024-T351 by SKPFM [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
A statistical study combining atomic force microscopy, scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPFM), and energy-dispersive spectroscopy was carried out on more than 300 Al2CuMg intermetallic particles of AA2024 alloy to determine their corrosion ...

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Nanomotion of bacteria to determine metabolic profile

open access: yesNanotechnology and Precision Engineering
In addition to their visible motion such as swimming (e.g., with the help of flagella), bacteria can also exhibit nanomotion that is detectable only with highly sensitive instruments, and this study shows that it is possible to detect bacterial ...

Single-Bilayer Graphene Test Structures for Kelvin Probe Microscopy

open access: yesC, 2023
A new technique for determining the point spread function, which is required for measuring the surface potential using Kelvin probe microscopy (KPM), is presented. The method involves using a silicon carbide substrate coated with single-layer and bilayer

Antiferromagnetic MnNi tips for spin-polarized scanning probe microscopy

open access: yes, 2018
Spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM) measures tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) with atomic resolution. While various methods for achieving SP probes have been developed, each is limited with respect to fabrication, performance, and allowed

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Standardization of surface potential measurements of graphene domains [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We compare the three most commonly used scanning probe techniques to obtain a reliable value of the work function in graphene domains of different thickness.
