Diagnostic Pathology of Microsporidiosis
Ultrastructural Pathology, 2003Microsporidia are ubiquitous spore-forming parasites that are important worldwide pathogens in the HIV/AIDS pandemic. They are also increasingly being seen in HIV(-) individuals. Infection has been documented in almost every tissue and organ in the body and in a broad spectrum of cell types, including epithelial, mesenchymal, and neural.

Intestinal microsporidiosis is caused by the protozoan parasites Enterocytozoon bieneusi and Encephalitozoon intestinalis. The disease has been described within the past decade and is found predominantly in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients in association with diarrhea.

[Microsporida microsporidiosis].
Annales de biologie clinique, 1994Microsporidia were infrequent in man until 1985. A new species, Enterocytozoon bieneusi, responsible for diarrhea, was described in AIDS patients in 1985. Little is known about the parasite; its diagnosis is difficult, and its incidence certainly underestimated.

This review shows the Microsporidia as unicellular protozoa strictly intracellular eukaryotic parasites of animals and humans. These study concerns life cycles, cytology, host-parasite relationships in animal models experimentally infected with microsporidia from human feces, demonstrating the host-inespecificity and visceral dissemination with ...
