Coherent islands and microstructural evolution

Physical Review B, 1993
Strained island growth in lattice-mismatched epitaxial systems differs from relaxed island growth. The total elastic energy of a strained island changes its chemical potential and growth rate. This effect is investigated for an ensemble of misfitting coplanar hemispherical caps interacting through surface diffusion alone.

Microstructure evolution during irradiation

Journal of Nuclear Materials, 1994
Abstract Microstructural evolution in metals and alloys during energetic particle irradiation is reviewed with emphasis placed on the underlying defect reaction processes. The microstructures produced by electron irradiation with a high-voltage electron microscope, fusion-neutron irradiation with a D-T fusion neutron source, fission-neutron ...

Multiscale Modeling of Precipitate Microstructure Evolution

Physical Review Letters, 2002
We demonstrate how three "state-of-the-art" techniques may be combined to build a bridge between atomistics and microstructure: (1) first-principles calculations, (2) a mixed-space cluster expansion approach, and (3) the diffuse-interface phase-field model. The first two methods are used to construct the driving forces for a phase-field microstructural

Microstructural evolution of aluminum alloy during friction stir welding under different tool rotation rates and cooling conditions

Journal of Materials Science & Technology, 2019
The microstructural evolution during friction stir welding (FSW) has long been studied only using one single welding parameter. Conclusions were usually made based on the final microstructure observation and hence were one-sided.

Microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of 316L stainless steel using multiaxial forging

, 2020
In order to investigate the effect of multi-axial forging on microstructural evolution and mechanical properties, warm multi-axial forging (MAF) on stainless steel 316L is performed. MAF 316L stainless steel exhibits higher specific strength that is used

Microscale Simulation of Martensitic Microstructure Evolution

Physical Review Letters, 2004
A new model for the evolution of multivariant martensitic microstructure in single crystals and polycrystals is developed. In contrast with Landau-Ginzburg models, which are limited in practice to nanoscale specimens, this new scale-free model is valid for length scales greater than 100 nm and without an upper bound.

Microstructural Evolution in Inhomogeneous Elastic Media

Journal of Computational Physics, 1997
A numerical method based on boundary integrals is developed to study the diffusional evolution of microstructures produced by solid state diffusional transformations in elastically stressed binary alloys in two dimensions. The precipitate and matrix phases are isotropic and linearly elastic.

Recent Development in Friction Stir Processing as a Solid-State Grain Refinement Technique: Microstructural Evolution and Property Enhancement

Critical reviews in solid state and materials sciences, 2019
Increasing demand of lightweight structures with exceptional properties elicits materials processing and manufacturing technologies to tailor blanks in order to achieve or enhance those prerequisite properties.

Microstructural Evolution in Nanocrystalline Ni Coatings

Journal of Materials Research, 2002
Gas-atomized Ni powders were mechanically milled under liquid nitrogen and subsequently sprayed using a high-velocity oxygen-fuel thermal spraying system. The resultant coatings were evaluated using various analytical methods, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy, and atom probe field ion microscopy (APFIM ...

Microstructural Evolution in Triaxial Porcelain

Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 2000
Microstructural evolution in a model triaxial porcelain was studied by X‐ray diffractometry and electron microscopy of quenched samples after firing for 3 h at 600°–1500°C. The clay component dehydroxylated to metakaolin at ∼550°C. Metastable sanidine formed from decomposition of the feldspar at >600°C and dissolved at >900°C.
