Hollow-core microstructured polymer optical fiber

Optics Letters, 2006
We have fabricated microstructured polymer optical fibers that guide light in a hollow core using the photonic bandgap mechanism. The hollow core allows the use of polymer fibers to be extended to wavelength ranges where material absorption typically prohibits their use, with attenuation lower than the material loss observed in the infrared.

Localized biosensing with Topas microstructured polymer optical fiber

Optics Letters, 2006
We present what is believed to be the first microstructured polymer optical fiber (mPOF) fabricated from Topas cyclic olefin copolymer, which has attractive material and biochemical properties. This polymer allows for a novel type of fiber-optic biosensor, where localized sensor layers may be activated on the inner side of the air holes in a ...

A microstructured polymer optical fiber biosensor

2006 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics and 2006 Quantum Electronics and Laser Science Conference, 2006
We demonstrate selective detection of fluorophore labeled antibodies from minute samples probed by a sensor layer of the complementary biomolecules immobilized inside the air holes of microstructured Polymer Optical Fibers.

Future directions for microstructured polymer optical fibers

SPIE Proceedings, 2004
Microstructured Polymer Optical Fibers (MPOF) were first made in 2001, and subsequent development has aimed at exploiting the material and design opportunities they present. Most effort has been focused on developing approaches for high bandwidth MPOF, and investigating the properties of multimode microstructured fibers.

Design of photosensitive microstructured polymer optical fibers

Frontiers of Optoelectronics in China, 2009
We propose a new hole-assisted polymer optical fiber design to eliminate the influence of dopant diffusion and to increase the ultra violet (UV) writing efficiency in fiber Bragg grating inscription. The optical waveguide is formed inside a solid core polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) doped with photosensitive trans-4-stilbenemethanol, surrounded by a ...

Fabrication of microstructured polymer optical fiber preform

SPIE Proceedings, 2006
We report a new technology to fabricate microstructured polymer optical fiber (MPOF, also named polymer photonic crystal fiber, pPCF) preform rods by in-situ polymerization of monomer in a mould. Series of pPCF preform rods including elliptic core fiber preform rod, single-mode fiber preform rod and ring-type holes structured preform rods have been ...

Numerical aperture in microstructured polymer optical fibers

SPIE Proceedings, 2005
Microstructured or 'air-clad' fibers, with air holes surrounding a large core, have demonstrated much wider light acceptance angles than conventional fibers. Recently, a new method employing leaky modes has been used to determine the numerical aperture in highly multimode air-clad microstructured fibers.

Ultrahigh-resolution fiber-optic image guides derived from microstructured polymer optical fiber preforms

Optics Letters, 2009
Ultrahigh-resolution fiber-optic image guides--fused image fiber, faceplate, and taper--were fabricated by using microstructured polymer optical fiber (MPOF) preforms composed of two polymers: polymethylmethacrylate and polystyrene. The pixel diameter in the resultant MPOF-based image guides was as small as 3 microm.

Applications of microstructured polymer optical fibers

2010 Photonics Global Conference, 2010
This paper considers several applications of microstructured polymer optical fibres (mPOF) which rely on the properties of the polymer. These include strain sensing using single-mode mPOF inscribed with long period gratings, the use chiral materials to make circularly birefringent fibres, combinations of polymers to study novel fibre designs and the ...

Disordered microstructure polymer optical fiber for stabilized coherent random fiber laser

Optics Letters, 2013
We have demonstrated the realization of a random polymer fiber laser (RPFL) based on laser dye Pyrromethene 597-doped one-dimensional disordered polymer optical fiber (POF). The stabilized coherent laser action for the disordered POF has been obtained by the weak optical multiple scattering of the polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes nanoparticles in ...
