Mid-infrared group IV nanowire laser
Semiconductor nanowires have shown great potential for enabling ultracompact lasers for integrated photonics platforms. Despite the impressive progress in developing nanowire lasers, their integration into Si photonics platforms remains challenging largely because of the use of III-V and II-VI semiconductors as gain media. Recently, group IV nanowires,

Single-frequency mid-infrared waveguide laser
A guided-wave chip laser operating in a single longitudinal mode at 2860 nm is presented. The cavity was set in the Littman-Metcalf configuration to achieve single-frequency operation with a side-mode suppression ratio above 33 dB. The chip laser's 2 MHz linewidth on a 10 ms scale was found to be limited by mechanical fluctuations, but its Lorentzian ...

This study investigates laser‐based oxide removal of Cu inserts in oxygen‐free conditions and examines long‐term oxidation kinetics and surface chemistry under different atmospheres via X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Al–Cu compound casting with differently oxidized surfaces is performed, and intermetallic phase formation, morphology, and thermal ...

Laser‐Induced Graphene from Waste Almond Shells
Almond shells, an abundant agricultural by‐product, are repurposed to create a fully bioderived almond shell/chitosan composite (ASC) degradable in soil. ASC is converted into laser‐induced graphene (LIG) by laser scribing and proposed as a substrate for transient electronics.

Infrared Nanocrystals for Space Application: Hardness to Irradiations
This article investigates infrared HgTe nanocrystals under X‐ray and ion irradiation, revealing remarkable radiation hardness. It uncovers distinct degradation mechanisms and shows that the nanomaterial outperforms integrated electronics. The results position colloidal nanocrystals as promising candidates for resilient space and harsh‐environment ...

Nanothermometry in Living Cells: Physical Limits, Conceptual and Material Challenges
Heat and temperature are fundamental to life. When nanothermometers began probing regions as small as a living cell, they triggered controversial claims of large intracellular temperature gradients. We review physical constraints energy‐conservation, entropy production, thermodynamic fluctuations, and molecular dynamics.

Towards Mid-Infrared Gas-Discharge Fiber Lasers
A 2.03 μm gas-discharge fiber laser based on atomic xenon is investigated. Various gas mixtures, such as He–Xe, Ar–Xe, He–Ar–Xe, and He–Ne, are studied by optical emission spectroscopy.
