Can the ischemic penumbra be identified on noncontrast CT of acute stroke? [PDF]

Background and Purpose: Early ischemic changes on noncontrast CT in acute stroke include both hypoattenuation and brain swelling, which may have different pathophysiological significance.

Methods:

A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.

A ruptured anterior communicating artery aneurysm associated with internal carotid artery agenesis and a middle cerebral artery anomaly. [PDF]
Agenesis of the internal carotid artery associated with an anomalous middle cerebral artery originating from the contralateral internal carotid artery is rare. We report a patient with agenesis of the internal carotid artery presented with a subarachnoid

ABSTRACT Objective Intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) before thrombectomy for ischemic stroke may alter clot structure and procedural performance. We investigated how IVT relates to thrombectomy metrics across stroke etiologies. Methods We performed a time‐to‐event analysis of consecutive patients with anterior circulation large vessel occlusion (acLVO ...

Anomalies of the Middle Cerebral Artery
There are several anomalies of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) in humans, such as accessory MCA, duplicated MCA, fenestration of MCA, and duplicated origin of MCA. Recently, unfused or twig-like MCA, which indicates MCA trunk occlusion with collateral plexiform arterial network, have been reported.

Bihemispheric Subcortical Infarcts in the Middle Cerebral Artery Territory
Background and purpose Previous studies have suggested embolic mechanisms for bihemispheric subcortical infarcts involving the anterior and posterior circulation. However, the mechanism of bihemispheric subcortical infarcts in middle cerebral artery (MCA)

The Role of Calcitonin Gene‐Related Peptide in High‐Altitude Headache: A Prospective Field Study
ABSTRACT Objective High‐altitude headache (HAH) is a common neurological condition associated with rapid ascent to high altitude. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying HAH remain incompletely understood. Calcitonin gene‐related peptide (CGRP), a neuropeptide implicated in migraine pathophysiology, may play a key role in the pathophysiology of ...

ABSTRACT Objective High‐resolution MRI enables detailed assessment of intracranial vessel wall pathology in moyamoya vasculopathy. We aimed to classify adult moyamoya vasculopathy etiologies using high‐resolution MRI and to examine subtype‐specific associations between high‐resolution MRI features and ischemic infarction.
