Ventilation and clearance of the middle ear
The Journal of Laryngology & Otology, 2009AbstractObjective:To investigate the ventilation and drainage mechanism of the middle ear.Study design:Prospective.Setting:We observed 304 (of 337) middle ears with tympanic membrane perforation or myringotomy (102 normal, 90 with otitis media with effusion and 112 with chronic otitis media); 912 observations were recorded overall.

Middle Ear Ventilation Mechanism
Acta Oto-Laryngologica, 1990The ventilation mechanism of the middle ear is very important as regards the pathogenesis of middle ear disease, but its mode of function is still obscure. Therefore, we tried to measure the ventilation and clearance of the middle ear using radio-isotope imaging techniques and 133Xe in order to gain a clearer picture of the ventilation mechanism.

Normal and Abnormal Middle Ear Ventilation
Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology, 1977Studies in infants and children have suggested a functional rather than mechanical obstruction of the Eustachian tube as a predisposing factor in middle ear effusions (MEE). To simulate this condition in the laboratory, an animal model was prepared using juvenile Rhesus monkeys.

Membrane Ventilating Tube for the Middle Ear
Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology, 1976A pilot study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a membrane ventilating tube as a Eustachian tube prosthesis in 20 patients with otitis media. The design was based partly on assumptions since many of the physiological parameters required to calculate the gas transport processes have not been previously reported. An elementary gas transport model

Ventilating tubes in the middle ear.
Archives of otolaryngology (Chicago, Ill. : 1960), 1976One hundred children from 1 to 14 years of age had serous otitis media, the manifestations of which were bilateral in all but four patients. Thus, 196 ears were treated with aeration of the middle ear by means of a short transmyringeal tube. The mean duration of the treatment was 3.4 years, and the mean observation time was 7.3 years.

The Laryngoscope, 1974
AbstractTwenty years have now passed since the first tube was placed through the tympanic membrane for middle ear ventilation. In this relatively short period of time, many different ideas for tube design have emerged and are presented. The types of middle ear fluid formation and the relationship of this formation to impaired eustachian tube function ...

Middle Ear Ventilation in Secretory Otitis Media
Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology, 1976The Eustachian tube function was determined repeatedly in 42 patients during as well as after the course of secretory otitis media. Air pressure equalization technique and impedance audiometry were used. Also the size of the mastoid air cell system was determined. It was found that poor tubal function and a small mastoid air cell system are significant

Burn Perforation as a Method of Middle Ear Ventilation
Archives of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, 1978Eardrum perforation caused by burn is well known to have a tendency to resist closure. This unfavorable tendency to resist closure. This unfavorable tendency can be turned to the benefit of patients with severe, Eustachian tube dysfunction. Pressure equalization of sufficient duration can be produced by making a burn perforation of the tympanic ...

Ventilation tube surgery and middle ear irrigation
The Laryngoscope, 1986AbstractTympanostomy and insertion of ventilation tubes has become one of the most commonly performed operations in the United States. Most authors reporting complications of this procedure describe a postoperative rate of otorrhea in the range of 10%–20% with some reports much higher.

Long‐term middle ear ventilation.
The Laryngoscope, 1981AbstractThis is a 16 year experience report on the author's wide flange ventilation tube, used for permanent or severe chronic Eustachian tube dysfunction. Two hundred and twenty‐eight implants in 198 ears of 126 patients were adequately followed. A small series of 13 Paparella implants is included.Patient age ranges from 6 months to 72 years.
