Biology, Injury, and Control of the European Needle-bending Midge (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) on Scotch Pine in Michigan [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Contarinia baeri is univoltine in Michigan. Adults emerge in spring, and females deposit eggs in small clusters in the sheaths of new-growth pine needles. Larvae hatch shortly thereafter and there are three larval instars.

Beyond birds: rethinking bird‐centered pathogen models in light of insect migration

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Migration redistributes biomass, nutrients, and pathogens across ecosystems. For decades, migratory birds have been treated as the default long‐distance pathogen vectors, shaping both conceptual frameworks and empirical models of disease ecology.

Marker-assisted selection for biotic stress (Bacterial leaf blight and gall midge) tolerance in Bc4F4 generation of rice (Oryza sativa L.)

open access: yesElectronic Journal of Plant Breeding, 2018
Bacterial blight (BB) of rice caused by the pathogen Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae and the insect gall midge (GM) (Orseolia oryzae) are two major limitations of rice production.

Susceptibility of raspberry cultivars to the raspberry cane midge (Resseliella theobaldi BARNES) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
During the 2004 growing season, five raspberry cultivars were evaluated in terms of their susceptibility to the raspberry cane midge (Resseliella theobaldi Barnes). The trial was carried out at Berkenye, Nógrád County, Hungary. The cultivars evaluated

Elucidation of the Conformational Rate Processes of the Macrocyclic Lactone (–)‐Nonenolide Through Variable Temperature NMR, Quantum Mechanics, and Molecular Dynamics

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Organic Chemistry, EarlyView.
The conformational rate processes that influence the NMR spectra of the ten‐membered lactone (–)‐nonenolide are elucidated using VT‐NMR, QM calculations and MD simulations. Reorientation of the alkene moiety with respect to the ring is identified as the slow exchange process.

Organic greenhouse horticulture in the Netherlands [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The total area occupied in the Netherlands by organic horticulture under glass is growing steadily. Several growers convert to this form of horticulture every year and some existing organic growers are expanding their businesses.

Consequences of Physical Disturbance by Tadpoles and Snails on Chironomid Larvae

open access: yesThe Scientific World Journal, 2014
Indirect interactions among community members impact on organisms. The effects of two snails, banded pond snail, Bellamya bengalensis (Lamarck), and Red-rimmed melania, Melanoides tuberculata (Müller), and tadpoles of Asian common toad, Duttaphrynus ...

Therapeutic DNA vaccine attenuates itching and allergic inflammation in mice with established biting midge allergy.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2020
Forcipomyia taiwana is a tiny hematophagous midge that attacks en masse. It is responsible for the most prevalent biting insect allergy in Taiwan. For t 2 is its major allergen. The intense itchy reactions can prevent allergic individuals from performing

Biting midge dynamics and bluetongue transmission: a multiscale model linking catch data with climate and disease outbreaks

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
Bluetongue virus (BTV) serotype 8 has been circulating in Europe since a major outbreak occurred in 2006, causing economic losses to livestock farms. The unpredictability of the biting activity of midges that transmit BTV implies difficulty in computing ...

Exploring pathways leading to drug‐resistant epilepsy for patients with cryptogenic new onset refractory status epilepticus

open access: yesEpilepsia, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective Cryptogenic new onset refractory status epilepticus (cNORSE) carries high risks of long‐term disability and post‐NORSE epilepsy, but mechanisms remain unclear. We aimed to assess the predictive value of inflammatory and brain injury biomarkers and determine whether immune disturbances persist in the chronic phase. Methods We enrolled
