Permethrin induces histological and cytological changes in the midgut of the predatory bug, Podisus nigrispinus.

open access: yesChemosphere, 2018
Insecticides used in the agriculture and forestry have side effects on non-target organisms used as natural enemies. This study evaluated the histopathology and cytotoxicity of permethrin on the midgut of the non-target predatory bug, Podisus nigrispinus

Adaptation of the invasive pest Drosophila suzukii to a specialized nutritional niche

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Unlike most Drosophila larvae that feed on spoiled food, Drosophila suzukii larvae thrive on ripening fruits and consequently face a low‐protein, high‐carbohydrate nutritional challenge. Comparisons of growth among D. suzukii, D. biarmipes, and D. melanogaster larvae across diets with varying protein‐to‐carbohydrate ratios demonstrate that D.

Physio-Transcriptomic Mechanism of Antimony Tin Oxide Nanoparticle-Induced Midgut Toxicity in Bombyx mori

open access: yesBiology
The silkworm (Bombyx mori) is an economically important insect that plays a crucial role in agricultural development. Antimony tin oxide, a high-tech multifunctional nanomaterial, is extensively utilized in contemporary industries due to its properties ...

Plant cell wall degrading enzymes, pectinase and cellulase, in the digestive system of the red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

open access: yesPlant Protection Science, 2014
In digestion, the red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, has been adapted to overcome the plant cell wall barrier, specially lignocellulosic and pectic compounds, by producing cellulase and pectinase enzymes. Partial biochemical characterisations of

Catalase protects Aedes aegypti from oxidative stress and increases midgut infection prevalence of Dengue but not Zika

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, 2017
Background Digestion of blood in the midgut of Aedes aegypti results in the release of pro-oxidant molecules that can be toxic to the mosquito. We hypothesized that after a blood meal, the antioxidant capacity of the midgut is increased to protect cells ...

TcALS knockdown accelerates metamorphosis via insulin signaling in Tribolium castaneum

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
RNAi silencing of TcALS accelerates larva‐to‐pupa metamorphosis in Tribolium castaneum. Abstract Insect metamorphosis is an evolutionary adaptation precisely regulated by nutritional and hormonal cues. The red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum, a major stored‐product pest, serves as an excellent model for studying this process.

Baculovirus Per Os Infectivity Factors Form a Complex on the Surface of Occlusion-Derived Virus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Five highly conserved per os infectivity factors, PIF1, PIF2, PIF3, PIF4, and P74, have been reported to be essential for oral infectivity of baculovirus occlusion-derived virus (ODV) in insect larvae.

Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) signaling regulates fluid excretion and uric acid metabolism in the mosquito Anopheles gambiae

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) signaling via its receptor has integral roles in mosquito physiology, mediating fluid excretion, stimulating hindgut contractions, and in modulating uric acid levels. Together, these results uncover previously unrecognized roles of prostaglandin signaling in osmotic balance and metabolic homeostasis in mosquitoes.

Matrine–Tea Saponin Synergism Involves Suppressed Detoxification and Digestion in a Leaf Beetle

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Tea saponin and matrine showed synergistic toxicity against Plagiodera versicolora. Combined exposure suppressed digestion‐ and detoxification‐related processes, while silencing the trypsin gene Pver105950 and chitinase gene Pver001190 increased larval susceptibility to tea saponin and matrine, respectively.

Midgut-derived NPF promotes mating-induced GSC proliferation.

open access: yes, 2018
(A) The number of NPF-positive cells was dramatically reduced in the middle midgut of Tkg-GAL4>NPFRNAi animals. (B–D) Frequency of germaria containing 1, 2, and 3 GSCs (left axis) and the average number of GSCs per germarium (right axis) in virgin (v ...
