The Costs of Migration

2019
In this chapter, I first lay out what it means to be a non-citizen in Singapore and the various gradations of rights within that category. I concurrently situate these differentiations within neoliberal economic logic, demonstrating the intersection of local narratives with hierarchies within the global migration regime.

Editorial: Migration costs

MIGRATION LETTERS, 2009
Much has been written about the costs—and benefits--of migration--in terms of the costs to the US (or receiving regions) and of the benefits to migrants. Massey (2005) concludes that because (Mexican) immigrants pay taxes, they are not a drain on public services.

Migration cost aware virtual network re-embedding in presence of resource failures

ICON, 2012
The virtual network embedding (VNE) problem deals with the embedding of virtual network (VN) requests in an underlying physical infrastructure (substrate network).

Optimal bounds for online page migration with generalized migration costs

2013 Proceedings IEEE INFOCOM, 2013
This paper attends to a generalized version of the classic page migration problem where migration costs are not necessarily given by the migration distance only, but may depend on prior migrations, or on the available bandwidth along the migration path.

The Influence of Psychic Costs on Rural‐Urban Migration

American Journal of Agricultural Economics, 1982
AbstractPsychic costs reflect differences in interregional utility, an important determinant of population among regions. Following Sjaastad's definition of psychic costs, the consumer surplus foregone by Appalachian migrants in two urban areas was measured as the difference between current urban income and an acceptable income level in eastern ...

Cost-Efficient Cluster Migration of VNFs for Service Function Chain Embedding

IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management
Network Function Virtualization (NFV) is a network architecture that separates network functions from dedicated hardware, implementing them as software modules known as Virtual Network Functions (VNFs), which are executed in virtual machines or ...

Migration Costs in Destinations

2017
This chapter fills a data void by examining what workers—interviewed where they worked—paid in their countries of origin for their foreign jobs. Workers were interviewed in Korea, Kuwait, and Spain in 2014, and in Malaysia in 2015; it was found that worker-paid migration costs were less than a month’s foreign earnings in Korea and Spain, but more in ...

Migration in Insects: Cost and Strategies

The Journal of Animal Ecology, 1993
1. An optimal energy partitioning model is used to predict the optimum adult sizes of the soma, gonads and flight apparatus in insects. A comparison of the investment in gonads and lipoidal reserves in winged and unwinged individuals in species from three families of aphids is used to test the predictions and define the cost of developing a flight ...

Service Migration or Task Rerouting: A Two-Timescale Online Resource Optimization for MEC

IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications
In this paper, a novel two-timescale resource management framework for mobile edge computing (MEC) is constructed. Unlike existing studies, for providing seamless and cost-efficient MEC services, this work aims to strike the balance between service ...
