Ker ima MP nizko gostoto, maso in velikost je zelo mobilna in se z lahkoto prenaša med različnimi ekosistemi. Številne študije navajajo, da se lahko na MP adsorbirajo organska in anorganska onesnaževala ter biološke molekule.
