Food Subsidy Effects on Host Foraging Behavior Shape Host–Macroparasite Infection Dynamics

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
Wildlife behavioral responses to different distributions of food subsidies could shape encounter and infection intensity of environmentally transmitted parasites. Using a mathematical model, we show that the way in which food subsidy changes transmission rate and variation in parasite burdens (e.g., through changes in time spent foraging and variation ...

Returning neighbors: eastern wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) occupancy in an urban landscape

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 90, Issue 1, January 2026.
We found that urban wild turkey had a higher probability of occupying a site if it was farther from roads and trails, closer to water, had more available habitat at finer spatial scales, or had lower mean tree height at larger spatial scales Abstract Once extirpated from most of its range because of overharvest and habitat loss in the early 1900s, the ...

Development of Thermally Insulating Nonwovens from Milkweed Fibers Using an Air-Laid Spike Process

open access: yesTextiles
Milkweed (MW) fiber is a natural fiber that provides tremendous thermal insulation properties due to its lightweight hollow structure. This study aimed to investigate the effect of milkweed fiber as a thermal fiber in nonwovens.

Establishment of Wildflower Islands to Enhance Roadside Health and Aesthetics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Wildflowers are crucial in the ecological function of the low-input roadside plant communities in terms of water andnutrient cycling, nutrient inputs such as nitrogen, total plant canopy cover, stand longevity, and provision of habitat for numerous small

Spreading of recently introduced North American sand dropseed (Sporobolus cryptandrus) threatens European native dry grassland arthropods

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, Volume 19, Issue 1, Page 131-145, January 2026.
The effects of sand dropseed (Sporobolus cryptandrus) invasion on arthropods depended on its density and varied between habitat types and arthropod groups. Vegetation‐dwelling, primarily herbivorous orthopterans and true bugs were most sensitive to invasion. Sand dropseed negatively affected the arthropod species of high natural value.

Characteristics of urban milkweed gardens that influence monarch butterfly egg abundance

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution
The eastern population of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) has dramatically declined in the last few decades, which is largely attributed to a loss of milkweed habitat in agricultural areas.

Ecology of the Western Queen Butterfly Danaus gilippus thersippus (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) in the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts

open access: yesInsects, 2020
The purpose of this study was to assess the ecological knowledge surrounding the western queen butterfly, Danaus gilippus thersippus (H. Bates). Specifically, our objectives were to synthesize existing data and knowledge on the ecology of the queen and ...
