There are few celestial sights that will elicit such a raw and primal emotion within you as seeing the Milky Way from a dark sky site. It, like totality of a solar or lunar eclipse, leaves you in complete awe and wonderment. Unfortunately, it is difficult in North America to find truly dark skies to see our home galaxy.

The article focuses on the development of a map of the Milky Way galaxy from the European Space Agency's Gaia spacecraft. It states the dataset provides a preliminary position of one billion stars and the sideways motions and distances of the brightest two million stars in the sky.

As set out in the Wakefield Memorandum, the financial administration of the Lucky Hill Scheme appeared to be simple and straightforward. In actual fact it proved to be cumbersome and unwieldy and long undue delays in financial matters nearly wrecked the scheme.

The Mass distribution of the Galaxy is reasonably well understood. Out to a radius of at least 200kpc, the enclosed mass increases roughly linearly with radius at about 10(10)M(circle dot) per kpc. The inner mass distribution is inconsistent with what we know to be present in stars and gas.

We intend to draw the course of the Milky Way between the stars. This observation has to be made on a clear night, in the field, at least 5 km from the outskirts of the city. The moon is disturbing and so are street lights even at considerable distances. Our pocket lamps must give very subdued light.

William Herschel discovered in 1783 that the Sun and solar system were moving towards the star λ Herculis (with celestial coordinates of 17 h 31 min, or 263°, right ascension and +26° declination), by analysing the proper motions of 13 stars. During the nineteenth century, a number of other astronomers made further measurements of stellar proper ...
