Discovery of a nearby spiral galaxy behind the Milky Way
THE disk of the Milky Way contains a lot of gas and dust, which obscures about 20% of the extragalactic sky. Galaxies hidden behind the Milky Way may have an important influence on the dynamics of the Local Group and its peculiar motion relative to the ...

Recent work has shown the previous conceptions of the mass and radius of the Milky Way Galaxy to be significantly in error. The present paper discusses various aspects of the current efforts to understand the Milky Way Galaxy which have resulted in new values for the galactic radius and mass.

Astrophysics, 2000
On the basis of literature data, and assuming that the Milky Way satisfies the Tully-Fisher relationship, the main photometric and kinematic characteristics of the Galaxy are summarized. It is shown that, based on the aggregate of the large-scale properties, the Milky Way is a normal L* galaxy.

On a clear, moonless night, away from city lights, one can see a broad streak of light spanning the heavens. During the northern winter months, it stretches from south to north, eastwards of the well-known constellation Orion. In the summer months, it stretches from the Southern Cross, through the tail of Scorpius, northwards to Cygnus.

The Milky Way and the Galaxies
1975There are fields in observational astronomy that are less suited to scientific work by the amateur observer. The following section describes one of them, for only rarely will the amateur astronomer be able to take an active part in the attack on the unsolved problems of galactic research.

The Earth is orbiting around the Sun, which itself is orbiting around the center of the Milky Way. Our Milky Way, the Galaxy, is the only galaxy in which we are able to study astrophysical processes in detail. Therefore, our journey through extragalactic astronomy will begin in our home Galaxy, with which we first need to become familiar before we are ...

The physical conditions in the interstellar medium of the Milky Way are briefly reviewed. It is noted that the local interstellar medium shows relatively uniform abundances and dust/gas ratios; in fact recent measurements of the 12C/13C ratio indicate that the gas is homogeneous to better than 15%.

The Milky Way: An active galaxy?
AIP Conference Proceedings, 1992The behavior and interactions of one or more core black holes is described for the mass density environment of the galaxy core and comparisons made between this environment and that of a large spherical stellar system typical of an active galaxy. Data is presented for a range of galaxy types in local galaxy clusters that indicates jetting with kinetic ...

We have been treating stars as though they were isolated objects in the sky, unrelated to anything else in the universe. Actually they are members of groups that ultimately influence the history and evolution of these same stars in various ways. Every star has neighbors all around it in the sky as though it belonged to some vast ensemble of stars that ...
