The spiral structure of our Milky Way Galaxy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Context. The spiral structure of our Milky Way Galaxy is not yet known. HII regions and giant molecular clouds are the most prominent spiral tracers. Models with 2−4 arms have been proposed to outline the structure of our Galaxy. Aims. Recently, new data

The star-formation history of the Milky Way Galaxy [PDF]

open access: bronze, 2009
The star-formation histories of the main stellar components of the Milky Way constrain critical aspects of galaxy formation and evolution. I discuss recent determinations of such histories, together with their interpretation in terms of theories of disk ...

Milky Way type galaxies in a ΛCDM cosmology [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2009
We analyse a sample of 52,000 Milky Way (MW) type galaxies drawn from the publicly available galaxy catalogue of the Millennium Simulation with the aim of studying statistically the differences and similarities of their properties in comparison to our Galaxy.

The Milky Way Galaxy as a strong gravitational lens [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2007
We study the gravitational lensing effects of spiral galaxies by taking a model of the Milky Way and computing its lensing properties. The model is composed of a spherical Hernquist bulge, a Miyamoto-Nagai disc and an isothermal halo. As a strong lens, a spiral galaxy like the Milky Way can give rise to four different imaging geometries.

An Eclectic View of our Milky Way Galaxy [PDF]

open access: green, 2013
The nature of our Milky Way Galaxy is reexamined from an eclectic point of view. Evidence for a central bar, for example, is not reflected in the distribution of RR Lyrae variables in the central bulge [4,5], and it is not clear if either a 2-armed or 4 ...

Grand Rotation Curve and Dark-Matter Halo in the Milky Way Galaxy [PDF]

open access: bronze, 2011
A grand rotation curve of the Milky Way Galaxy is constructed, which covers a wide range of radius from the Galactic Center to ~1 Mpc, and is deconvolved into bulge, disk and halo components by least-squares fitting.

The Milky Way and the evolution of disk galaxies

open access: green, 2002
We present a phenomenological approach to the study of disk galaxy evolution, based on i) a detailed modelling of the Milky Way (used as a prototype disk galaxy) and ii) an extension of the model to other disks through some simple scaling relations, obtained in the framework of Cold Dark matter models.

The Local Stellar Halo is Not Dominated by a Single Radial Merger Event

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters, 2022
We use halo dwarf stars with photometrically determined metallicities that are located within 2 kpc of the Sun to identify local halo substructure. The kinematic properties of these stars do not indicate a single, dominant radial merger event (RME).
