Electrodialytic remediation of suspended mine tailings
Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Part A, 2008This work shows the laboratory results of nine electrodialytic remediation experiments on copper mine tailings. A newly designed remediation cell, where the solids were kept in suspension by airflow, was tested. The results show that electric current could remove copper from suspended tailings applying 40 mA during 7 days.

Engineering Geology, 2011
Abstract Mining generates huge quantities of waste materials from ore extraction and milling operations, which accumulate in tailings and open impoundments. The risks associated with mine tailings have different nature, namely stability, rupture, surface and groundwater contamination, acid mine drainage (AMD) and precipitation of secondary minerals ...

Engineering Properties of Mine Tailings
Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division, 1971The engineering properties of tailings from nine mines are summarized to demonstrate that these are good engineering materials. Such properties as gradation, specific gravity, mineral content, laboratory maximum and minimum density, in-place density and moisture, permeability, triaxial shear data, and one-dimensional compression data are presented in ...

Biopolymer Stabilization of Mine Tailings
Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, 2013AbstractA feasibility study was performed on using xanthan gum and guar gum, two biopolymers that are naturally occurring and inexpensive, to stabilize mine tailings (MT). The simple fall cone method was adopted to evaluate the liquid limit and undrained shear strength of sun-dried MT mixed with xanthan gum or guar gum solutions at different ...

Combined tailings and mine waste
2017The benefits of combining tailings and mine waste in a relatively homogenous manner, in which tailings just fill the voids between the waste rock particles while the waste rock maintains particle-to-particle contact, has been the subject of study over the course of several years. Such a combination of materials could be used for a closure cover or as a

Abandonment of Mine Tailings Ponds
Canadian Water Resources Journal, 1986In response to growing concern about the long-term environmental impact of abandoned mines and their tailing ponds, regulating authorities are beginning to request that abandonment plans be submitted with license applications. This paper suggests criteria that such plans should meet and emphasizes the need to ensure that adequate funding will be ...

PHYTOSTABLIZATION OF SULPHIDE MINE TAILINGS
SGEM International Multidisciplinary Scientific GeoConference EXPO ProceedingsOrphaned or abandoned sulphide tailing disposal sites pose significant environmental hazards, including eolian dispersion, water erosion, acid mine drainage, and heavy metal mobility. Phytostabilization, an eco-friendly strategy, entails the use of alkaline amendments alongside non-native plant species capable of thriving in environments with high ...
