Clay mineral nanostructures regulate sequestration of organic carbon in typical fluvial sediments

open access: yesHeliyon
The association between clay minerals and organic carbon is pivotal for understanding transport, burial, and preservation processes of sedimentary organic carbon.

Coordinated Architectural and Chemical Reinforcement in the Crushing Mandible of a Soldier Termite

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The crushing mandible of a soldier termite withstands substantial biting loads despite lacking mineral. Its cuticle is partitioned: convex teeth pair hardness and zinc enrichment with aligned chitin fibers for contact durability, while stiffer concave regions between teeth carry bending loads.

Chitin‐Derived Carbon‐Metal Functional Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Functional carbon materials are synthesized from combination of biopolymer (chitin) and iron precursors. The resultant material exhibits superior surface area and adsorptive properties compared to carbon materials synthesized directly from pure chitin.

Changes in Soil Particulate and Mineral-Associated Organic Carbon Contents Under Nitrogen Addition

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2022
Abstract Aims As the largest carbon (C) pool in terrestrial ecosystems, soil organic carbon (SOC) plays a critical role in the global C cycle. Particulate organic carbon (POC) and mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC) are two categories of SOC that are based on particle size. Nitrogen (N) addition considerably affects SOC content.

Towards a mechanistic understanding of carbon stabilization in manganese oxides [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Minerals stabilize organic carbon (OC) in sediments, thereby directly affecting global climate at multiple scales, but how they do it is far from understood.

Effects of Plant Diversity on Soil Organic Carbon in Alpine Meadow in Northeastern Qinghai-Xizang Plateau

open access: yesGaoyuan qixiang
Plant diversity significantly affects the structure and function of ecosystems and plays a crucial role in soil organic carbon sequestration. In the past, the effects of plant diversity on soil organic carbon were mostly carried out under artificial plant

Photo‐Switchable Molecular Module Programming PET Biodegradation in Aquatic Environments

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We address the plastic durability paradox by integrating an itaconic acid–derived pyrrolidone module into polymer backbones. Sunlight in water triggers Norrish Type I ring‐opening and hydrophilization, enabling rapid biodegradation into nontoxic minerals.

Fractions of particulate organic matter in soils depending upon farmyard manure and mineral fertilization [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
In a long-term fertilization trial particulate organic matter (POM) was investigated after 20 years of farmyard manure vs. mineral fertilization at different levels with the method of Meijboom et al. (1995).

Benthic fluxes of dissolved organic nitrogen in the Lower St. Lawrence Estuary and implications for selective organic matter degradation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The distribution of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and carbon (DOC) in sediment porewaters was determined at nine locations along the St. Lawrence estuary and in the gulf of St. Lawrence. In a previous manuscript (Alkhatib et al., 2012a), we have shown
