Adaptive Hydrogels With Spatiotemporal Stiffening Using pH‐Modulating Enzymes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The chemomechanical coupling in an adaptive hydrogel is studied to further the development of adaptive hydrogels. This coupling is achieved by embedding a pH‐modulating enzyme in a pH‐responsive hydrogel. The enzymatic reaction can be triggered locally, which generates a pH‐decreasing wave throughout the system, increasing the crosslinking density and ...

Fractal analysis of quartz boundaries as a strain rate proxy for tracing Earth’s stress history

open access: yesScientific Reports
Understanding strain rates in naturally deformed rocks is crucial for reconstructing the tectonic history of orogenic belts. This study focuses on the Chahzar Thrust Zone, located within the Sanandaj-Sirjan metamorphic zone of southwestern Iran, an ideal

Discrimination of fish oil and mineral oil slicks on sea water [PDF]

open access: yes, 1969
Fish oil and mineral oil slicks on sea water can be discriminated by their different spreading characteristics and by their reflectivities and color variations over a range of wavelengths.

Multi‐Responsive Dendrimer‐Hyaluronic Acid Hydrogel With Lubricating and Immunoregulatory Functions for Synergistic Osteoarthritis Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A hydrogel with dynamic cross‐links was formed by cross‐linking hyaluronic acid with curcumin‐preloaded, phenylboronic acid‐modified poly(amidoamine) dendrimers. This hydrogel exhibited excellent injectability and self‐healing ability, enabling controlled Cur release in response to low pH, high reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, or mechanical ...

Self‐Assembled Nanoclay Gel With Spheroid MSC‐Derived Exosome Mimetics to Integrate Demineralized Bone Matrix and Noggin‐Targeting miRNA for Synergistic Osteogenesis

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We report a versatile nanoclay gel carrier platform that enhances the osteogenic efficacy of demineralized bone matrix (DBM) by integrating nanoclay‐based self‐assembly with cell‐derived exosome mimetics loaded with noggin‐targeting miR‐200c. This design amplifies BMP signaling, thereby promoting DBM‐mediated osteogenesis and offering a promising ...

Cavitation pitting and erosion of aluminum 6061-T6 in mineral oil water [PDF]

open access: yes
Cavitation erosion studies of aluminum 6061-T6 in mineral oil and in ordinary tap water are presented. The maximum erosion rate (MDPR, or mean depth of penetration rate) in mineral oil was about four times that in water. The MDPR in mineral oil decreased

Impact of Na and K fertilization on Eucalyptus response to drought - integrative approach : S02T08 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Eucalyptus is a fast growing tropical species depending strongly on environment, soil fertility and water supply. Potassium fertilization improves drought resistance and growth performance, but world resources decline while cost increases.

Mineral Acquisition from Clay by Budongo Forest Chimpanzees [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Chimpanzees of the Sonso community, Budongo Forest, Uganda were observed eating clay and drinking clay-water from waterholes. We show that clay, clay-rich water, and clay obtained with leaf sponges, provide a range of minerals in different concentrations.

Silicified Wood‐Inspired, High‐Strength Fire‐Resistant Chitin‐Based Aerogels for Sustainable High‐Temperature Thermal Insulation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by natural silicified wood, a biomimetic mineralized chitin‐derived aerogel is constructed. It can withstand 81 000 times its own weight, and its backside temperature is 130.4°C after exposure to ∼1300°C butane flame for 600 s, exhibiting high‐strength, fire‐resistance, and super thermal‐insulation properties.
