Minimal hepatic encephalopathy

Nature Clinical Practice Gastroenterology & Hepatology, 2007
Minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE), formerly known as subclinical hepatic encephalopathy, is the mild cognitive impairment commonly seen in patients who have cirrhosis. Current understanding suggests that MHE forms part of the spectrum of hepatic encephalopathy, although this remains to be proven.

Minimal hepatic encephalopathy: A review

Neuroscience Research, 2016
Minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) is the earliest form of hepatic encephalopathy and can affect up to 80% of patients with liver cirrhosis. By definition, MHE is characterized by cognitive function impairment in the domains of attention, vigilance and integrative function, but obvious clinical manifestation are lacking.

Characteristics of Minimal Hepatic Encephalopathy

Metabolic Brain Disease, 2004
The term minimal hepatic encephalopathy refers to the subtle changes in cognitive function, electrophysiological parameters, cerebral neurochemical/neurotransmitter homeostasis, cerebral blood flow, metabolism, and fluid homeostasis that can be observed in patients with cirrhosis who have no clinical evidence of hepatic encephalopathy. Use of this term

Minimal Hepatic Encephalopathy

Clinics in Liver Disease
Minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) is a pervasive frequent complication of cirrhosis of any etiology. The diagnosis of MHE is difficult as the standard neurologic examination is essentially within normal limits. None of the symptoms and signs of overt HE is present in a patient with MHE, such as confusion, disorientation, or asterixis.

Qualifying and quantifying minimal hepatic encephalopathy

Metabolic Brain Disease, 2015
Minimal hepatic encephalopathy is the term applied to the neuropsychiatric status of patients with cirrhosis who are unimpaired on clinical examination but show alterations in neuropsychological tests exploring psychomotor speed/executive function and/or in neurophysiological variables. There is no gold standard for the diagnosis of this syndrome.

Attention Deficits in Minimal Hepatic Encephalopathy

Metabolic Brain Disease, 2001
Minimal hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is characterized by a decrease of psychomotor speed, and deficits in visual perception, visuo-spatial orientation, and visuo-constructive abilities. Attention deficits have also been proposed to be part of the syndrome. Several attempts were made in the past to elaborate suitable psychometric means for the assessment

Rifaximin Therapy in Minimal Hepatic Encephalopathy Cirrhotics

American Journal of Gastroenterology, 2011
To the Editor: We read the interesting trial by Sidhu et al. (1) dealing with the efficacy of rifaximin in improving health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) cirrhotics as compared with placebo. The authors concluded that rifaximin is significantly associated with an improvement of HRQOL, as assessed by sickness ...

Treatment of minimal hepatic encephalopathy

Hepatology Research, 2008
Several reports, conducted as a placebo‐controlled, double‐blind study, presented a favorable result in treating MHE. They included branched chain aminoacid, fluzazenil‐a benzodiazepin receptor antagonist, lactulose, lactitol, and L‐ornithin‐L‐aspartate. Lactulose and lactitol have been shown to be effective in MHE.

Clinical and Neurologic Manifestation of Minimal Hepatic Encephalopathy and Overt Hepatic Encephalopathy

Clinics in Liver Disease, 2015
Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) shows a wide spectrum of neuropsychiatric manifestations. A combined effort with neuropsychological and psychometric evaluation has to be performed to recognize the syndrome, whereas minimal HE (MHE) is largely under-recognized. Subtle symptoms of MHE can only be diagnosed through specialized neuropsychiatric testing.

Minimal Hepatic Encephalopathy

Transplantation, 2012
The long-term effect of liver transplantation (LT) on cognitive functions and the complete reversibility of minimal hepatic encephalopathy are poorly documented. Much evidence indicates that spatial attention improves starting from the immediate period after LT.
