On the Minimal Error of Empirical Risk Minimization

open access: yesCoRR, 2021
We study the minimal error of the Empirical Risk Minimization (ERM) procedure in the task of regression, both in the random and the fixed design settings. Our sharp lower bounds shed light on the possibility (or impossibility) of adapting to simplicity of the model generating the data.

On Provenance Minimization

open access: yesACM Transactions on Database Systems, 2011
Provenance information has been proved to be very effective in capturing the computational process performed by queries, and has been used extensively as the input to many advanced data management tools (e.g., view maintenance, trust assessment, or query answering in probabilistic databases). We observe here that while different (

Not-so-minimal for minimally invasive surgery

open access: yesIndian Journal of Ophthalmology, 2022
Sub-macular hemorrhage poses a potential threat to vision if left untreated. The preferred surgical technique to clear sub-macular hemorrhage includes vitrectomy followed by retinotomy using a 41G needle with subsequent injection of recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (r-tPA) followed by air/SF6 injection into the sub-retinal space.

Curious Intersections, Uncommon Magic: Steve Reich’s It’s Gonna Rain

open access: yesCurrent Musicology, 2005
1965 was a watershed year in the life of Steve Reich. Following numerous experiments with magnetic tape, he had, while creating his tape piece It’s Gonna Rain, identified a fascinating process that would serve as the basic compositional tool of his ...

The Persistence of Minimalism [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The following work develops a new and general theory of minimalism – one addressing both its transhistorical and interdisciplinary dimensions, and capable of accounting for existing minimalism of every epoch and in every medium, while suitably open to ...

The Names of Minimalism [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
Minimalism stands as the key representative of 1960s radicalism in art music histories—but always as a failed project. In The Names of Minimalism, Patrick Nickleson holds in tension collaborative composers in the period of their collaboration, as well as

Minimal weight and colexicographically minimal integer representations [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Mathematical Cryptology, 2007
Redundant number systems (e.g., signed binary representations) have been utilized to efficiently implement algebraic operations required by public-key cryptosystems, especially those based on elliptic curves. Several families of integer representations have been proposed that have a minimal number of nonzero digits (so-called
