Minor exclusion in quasi-transitive graphs [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
In this note, we show that locally finite quasi-transitive graphs are quasi-isometric to trees if and only if every other locally finite quasi-transitive graph quasi-isometric to them is minor excluded. This generalizes results by Ostrovskii and Rosenthal and by Khukhro on minor exclusion for groups.

Groups not presentable by products [PDF]

open access: yesGroups Geom. Dyn. 7 (2013), 181--204, 2010
In this paper we study obstructions to presentability by products for finitely generated groups. Along the way we develop both the concept of acentral subgroups, and the relations between presentability by products on the one hand, and certain geometric and measure or orbit equivalence invariants of groups on the other.

Detailed kinship estimation for detecting bias among breeding families in a reintroduced population of the endangered bagrid catfish Tachysurus ichikawai

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
In the process of captive breeding and reintroduction of endangered animal species, it is crucial to minimize familial bias in reproductive success during the reintroduction phase to preserve genetic diversity. In this study, we attempted to identify the familial lineage of individuals of the endangered bagrid fish Tachysurus ichikawai born at the ...

Focus on the Common Good: Group Distributional Robustness Follows [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
We consider the problem of training a classification model with group annotated training data. Recent work has established that, if there is distribution shift across different groups, models trained using the standard empirical risk minimization (ERM) objective suffer from poor performance on minority groups and that group distributionally robust ...

The democratic engagement of Britain's ethnic minorities [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Democratic engagement is a multi-faceted phenomenon that embraces citizens' involvement with electoral politics, their participation in ‘conventional’ extra-parliamentary political activity, their satisfaction with democracy and trust in state ...

Optimal SNP filtering strategies for pedigree reconstruction: A case study with wild red‐spotted masu salmon population

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
In this article, we tested optimal SNP filtering strategies for accurate parentage assignment and pedigree reconstruction for a wild population of red‐spotted masu salmon, Oncorhynchus masou ishikawae. We found that mid‐point filtering in terms of call rate and minor allele frequency performs well for pedigree reconstruction.

Micro-Segregation of Ethnic Minorities in Rome: Highlighting Specificities of National Groups in Micro-Segregated Areas

open access: yesLand, 2023
This paper aims to study ethnic micro-segregation in Rome, namely, high residential concentrations of ethnic groups at the micro-area level within neighbourhoods with low concentrations of these groups, with a focus on specific situations of spatial ...

Meta-nilpotent knot invariants and symplectic automorphism groups of free nilpotent groups [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
We develop nilpotently $p$-localization of knot groups in terms of the (symplectic) automorphism groups of free nilpotent groups. We show that any map from the set of conjugacy classes of the outer automorphism groups yields a knot invariant. We also investigate the automorphism groups and compute the resulting knot invariants.

Educational achievement and ethnicity in compulsory schooling [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
This paper analyzes the evolution of the attainment gap between white British born and ethnic minority pupils throughout compulsory schooling, from the age of 5 to 16. At the start of school, pupils from most ethnic groups substantially lag behind White

Evaluating the origin and spread of spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) in Japan

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
The invasive spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is native to China and is a serious economic pest in the Republic of Korea and the United States, though it is not considered a pest in Japan. We established a distribution map of L. delicatula in Japan through a comprehensive review of published literature and citizen science reports and analyzed ...
