Tough, Ductile, and Strong Hard‐Soft Cementitious Composite Enabled by Multi‐Material Additive Manufacturing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Drawing inspiration from the layered hard‐soft architecture found in sea sponges, this work establishes a new framework for architected cementitious composites (ACC) through multi‐material additive manufacturing (MMAM) process. The integration of mortar and elastomer phases into layered architectures enables synergistic toughening mechanisms, including

Measuring the Hall Effect in Hysteretic Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The authors highlight common pitfalls in measuring the Hall effect: in hysteretic magnets, improper data processing can create signals that look exotic but are not real. This Perspective explains the origin of these artifacts and presents practical measurement strategies that help researchers identify reliable Hall responses in complex magnetic ...

Endovascular treatment of a descending thoracic aorta aneurysm in a patient with right sided aortic arch: a case report

open access: yesCVIR Endovascular
Backround Right-sided aortic arch is a rare congenital variant. The Edwards classification describes three types of right sided-aortic arch: right aortic arch with aberrant left subclavian artery, right aortic arch with mirror image branching, and right ...

On bloodvessel branching analysis for the detection of Alzheimer's disease

open access: yes, 2014
Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is increasingly prevalent in modern society and methods for its diagnosis are only just starting to emerge. Given images of brain tissue, we show how Alzheimer’s disease can be detected from the branching structures of blood ...

Tailoring Phonon‐Driven Responses in α‐MoO3 through Isotopic Enrichment

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The implementation of polaritonic materials into nanoscale devices requires selective tuning of parameters to realize desired spectral or thermal responses. One robust material, α‐MoO3, an orthorhombic crystal boasting three distinct phonon dispersions, provides three polaritonic dispersions of hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPhPs) across the ...

Superallowed β-Decay Branching Ratio Measurement of 26Si [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
As part of the continued effort to test the unitarity of the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, the branching ratio for the Tvz = -1 superallowed 0^+ → 0^+ positron-emitter ^26Si was measured precisely for the first time. Since the QvEC value, 4840.86(10)

Linker‐Engineered Dimeric Acceptors Afford Efficient Organic Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution via Tailored Nanomorphology for Long‐Lived Charge Accumulation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We developed a new series of monomeric (MY) and dimeric acceptors incorporating unfused (DY1) and fused (DY2) linkers, which establish a controlled self‐aggregation trend of MY > DY2 > DY1. The DY2‐based system yields a bulk‐heterojunction nanoparticle morphology that appears to balance phase separation and interfacial accessibility, consistent with ...

Nonlocal Metaspire: A Scalable Elastic Material Platform With Decoupled Mechanical Modes

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Nonlocal Metaspire introduces sequential rotation to realize wider scalability in implementing complex nonlocal couplings in elastic metamaterials while suppressing unintended mode coupling. Numerical results clarify the underlying wave motions, demonstrate mode‐decoupled roton and maxon formation, and support a straightforward extension to higher ...

Comparison of laser performance for diode-pumped Tm:YLF of various doping concentrations

open access: yes, 2005
Single-end-pumped laser performance of 2, 4, and 6at.% Tm-doped YLF rods is reported. For the pumping configuration employed, crystal fracture was observed to occur for a thermal load per unit absorption length of ~13W/cm.
