Evaluation of the Spherical Flange Concept for a Rocket Engine [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Due to the inherent tolerance variability of hardware, flange misalignments occur during installation of mating components for a liquid propellant rocket engine. Flange misalignments include axial, lateral, and angular offsets. If these misalignments are

Resolving the Structural Duality of Graphene Grain Boundaries

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Cantilever ncAFM resolves the atomic structure of grain boundaries in graphene, revealing coexisting stable and metastable types. Both contain pentagon/heptagon defects, but metastable GBs show irregular geometries. Modeling shows metastable GBs form under compression, exhibiting vertical corrugation, while stable GBs are flat.

Numerical Investigation of the Influence of Geometric Features and Weld Metal Properties on Stress and Strain States in X80 Girth Welds

open access: yesMetals
In the design and integrity assessment of long-distance natural gas pipelines, it is critical to assess how geometrical features and material properties influence the stress and strain states of girth welds.

Flexoelectrically Induced Polar Topology in Twisted SrTiO3 Membranes

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Twisted SrTiO3 bilayers host polar vortices of flexoelectric origin, revealed through combined experiment and theory. By reconstructing polarization from the toroidal moment of strain gradients, the work establishes a 3D chiral state with broken inversion and mirror symmetries.

Design and Analysis of a Three-Coil Topology for WPT Applications

open access: yesIEEE Access
In conventional three-coil topologies, when the mutual inductance between the primary and receiver coils is designed to be nonzero, misalignment causes the system to lose its constant output characteristics and degrades overall performance.

Admittance Selection for Force-guided Assembly of Polyhedral Parts in Single-point Contact [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
The selection of the proper admittance is important in achieving force-guided assembly. This paper identifies procedures for selecting the appropriate spatial admittance to achieve reliable force-guided assembly of polyhedral parts for single-point ...

Evidence for Itinerant Ferromagnetic Flat Bands Producing Large Transverse Responses

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Itinerant ferromagnetic flat bands are demonstrated in GdCo5 with a high Curie temperature of 940K, a stacked honeycomb–kagome lattice, through angle‐resolved photoemission spectroscopy and magneto‐thermoelectric measurements. These topological flat bands generate large Berry curvaturte, producing gigantic anomalous Nernst effect with record‐high ...

Misalignment-Induced Aberration Compensation for Off-Axis Reflective Telescopes Based on Fusion of Spot Images and Zernike Coefficients

open access: yesPhotonics
Off-axis reflective telescopes are prone to component misalignment due to external environmental factors and mechanical vibrations. This misalignment introduces low-order aberrations, which severely degrade imaging quality.

Admittance Selection for Planar Force-Guided Assembly for Single-Point Contact with Friction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
This paper identifies procedures for selecting the appropriate admittance to achieve reliable planar force-guided assembly for single-point frictional contact cases. A set of conditions that are imposed on the admittance matrix is presented.
