Iron and Other Metal Ions in Human Health and Disease

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 10, October 2026.
Iron, copper, zinc, and calcium orchestrate cellular function through distinct yet cooperative mechanisms: redox‐active iron and copper cycle between oxidation states to act as Fenton catalysts and electron carriers in oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS); redox‐inert zinc serves as a structural component of zinc‐finger proteins and a catalytic cofactor ...

Impaired Hepatic Glucose Metabolism Is Associated With Glucose Intolerance in Mice Carrying α2 Isoform Na,K‐ATPase Mutation

open access: yesActa Physiologica, Volume 242, Issue 10, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim The Na,K‐ATPase is important for energy demanding cellular processes, including essential components of substrate metabolism and metabolic flexibility. Mice heterozygous for the hemiplegic migraine‐related mutation, G301R, of the Na,K‐ATPase α2 isoform (α2+/G301R) demonstrated altered metabolism in the heart.

P4 ATPases: Flippases in Health and Disease

open access: yes, 2013
P4 ATPases catalyze the translocation of phospholipids from the exoplasmic to the cytosolic leaflet of biological membranes, a process termed "lipid flipping".

The Unfolded Protein Response as a Modulator of Cancer‐Immune Cell Communication in the Tumour Microenvironment

open access: yesJournal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Volume 30, Issue 19, October 2026.
ABSTRACT The tumour microenvironment (TME) comprises a dynamic network of structural, cellular, and signalling components that interact to influence tumour development. Immune cells play a key role in recognizing and eliminating cancer cells through detection of tumour‐derived membrane and secreted proteins processed in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER ...

Investigation of three accessory subunits of complex I from Yarrowia lipolytica [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The nicotinamide-adenine-dinucleotide (NADH):ubiquinone oxidoreductase (complex I) from the strictly aerobic yeast Y. lipolytica contains at least 26 “accessory” subunits however the significance of most of them remains unknown. The aim of this study was

Iron Homeostasis and Liver Diseases

open access: yesJournal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Volume 30, Issue 20, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Iron is an essential micronutrient whose ability to cycle between ferric (Fe3+) and ferrous (Fe2+) states makes it crucial for physiological processes, including oxygen transport, DNA synthesis, and oxidative phosphorylation. However, because both deficiency and excess can cause severe pathology, precise regulation is critical. The liver plays

Interplay between store‐operated calcium entry and mitochondrial phosphate handling modulates force and fatigue during exercise

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, Volume 604, Issue 20, Page 8379-8427, 15 October 2026.
Abstract figure legend This study uses systems modelling to demonstrate a role of SOCE in sustained force generation during exercise. SOCE leads to two competing effects on contractile force in myofibres – increased cross‐bridge cycling due to elevated myoplasmic Ca2+$\text{Ca}^{2+}$ enhances force, whereas increased accumulation of myoplasmic ...

Stoichiometry and localization of the stator subunits E and G in Thermus thermophilus H+-ATPase/synthase.

open access: yes, 2016
Proton-translocating ATPases are central to biological energy conversion. Although eukaryotes contain specialized F-ATPases for ATP synthesis and V-ATPases for proton pumping, eubacteria and archaea typically contain only one enzyme for both tasks ...

Relaxin‐2: Shaping the Proteomic Landscape of Skeletal Muscle Physiology, Glucose Trafficking, and Mitochondrial Function in Rat

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, Volume 40, Issue 18, 30 September 2026.
Cardioprotective hormone relaxin‐2 showed relevant effects on rat skeletal muscle by altering proteins linked to muscle function, regeneration, differentiation, mitochondrial function, glucose metabolism, and structural integrity and organization. Specifically, relaxin‐2 reduced the expression of 95 proteins, increased 32, and elicited unique proteins ...
