Dynamic connectivity in the mitral cell–granule cell microcircuit

open access: yesSeminars in Cell & Developmental Biology, 2006
The interactions between excitatory mitral cells and inhibitory granule cells are critical for the regulation of olfactory bulb activity. Here we review anatomical and physiological data on the mitral cell-granule cell circuit and provide a quantitative estimate of how this connectivity varies as a function of distance between mitral cells.

Mitral Cell Dendrites: A Comparative Approach

Anatomy and Embryology, 1994
Phylogenetically persistent structures such as the mitral cells of the vertebrate olfactory bulb undergo changes in their dendritic arbor in the course of evolution. The morphology of mitral cells and the main elements of the olfactory bulb circuit in all classes of vertebrates are reviewed in this paper.

Mitral cell‐to‐glomerulus connectivity: An HRP study of the orientation of mitral cell apical dendrites

Journal of Comparative Neurology, 1991
AbstractIt has been suggested that the principal output cells of the main olfactory bulb, the mitral cells, along with the glomerulus they enter, form an anatomical and functional column. To test the extent to which mitral cell somata lying close together in the mitral cell layer are connected to the same glomerulus, we reconstructed 267 mitral cells ...

Pulmonary Mast Cells in Mitral Stenosis

Cardiovascular Research, 1969
Pulmonary mast cell counts in cases of mitral stenosis and chronic left ventricular failure confirm Ehrlich's original observation that there is a proliferation of such cells in brown induration of the lung. This mast cell hyperplasia is associated with the laying down of fibrous tissue after chronic lymphatic obstruction with oedema of alveolar walls.

Red Cell Survival in Patients with Mitral Valvular Disease and Mitral Valve Prostheses

Circulation, 1966
Red cell survival times were measured in patients with mitral valvular disease, mitral ball-valve prostheses, and multiple valve prostheses. Red cell survival was shortened in patients with mitral valvular disease but not in patients who had insertion of a normally functioning mitral prosthesis or after mitral commissurotomy.

Mitral valve reconstruction in sickle cell disease

The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 1996
As survival improves in patients with sickle cell anemia, the prospects of performing cardiac surgical procedures on older patients with this genetic defect increase. We describe the successful management of a 52-year-old patient with sickle cell disease (homozygous for hemoglobin S) and a history of multiple sickle crisis undergoing cardiopulmonary ...
