Robustness to Format Effects of IRT Linking Methods for Mixed-Format Tests

Applied Measurement in Education, 2006
Four item response theory linking methods (2 moment methods and 2 characteristic curve methods) were compared to concurrent (CO) calibration with the focus on the degree of robustness to format effects (FEs) when applying the methods to multidimensional data that reflected the FEs associated with mixed-format tests.

Case-Mixing Effects on Spelling Recognition: The Importance of Test Format

Journal of Psycholinguistic Research, 2000
In a multiple-choice spelling recognition test, 56 university students were more accurate on more regular than irregular words, and on lower-case than mixed-case words, with the case mixing effect greater for irregular than regular words. In Experiment 2, the same words were presented singly in correct or incorrect spellings and distortion of word ...

Examining the Impacts of Ignoring Rater Effects in Mixed‐Format Tests

Journal of Educational Measurement, 2021
AbstractThe use of mixed‐format tests made up of multiple‐choice (MC) items and constructed response (CR) items is popular in large‐scale testing programs, including the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and many district‐ and state‐level assessments in the United States.

Assessment of Person Fit for Mixed-Format Tests

Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, 2015
Person-fit assessment may help the researcher to obtain additional information regarding the answering behavior of persons. Although several researchers examined person fit, there is a lack of research on person-fit assessment for mixed-format tests.

Possible Factors Which May Impact Kernel Equating of Mixed-Format Tests

2021
Mixed-format tests contain items with different formats such as dichotomously scored and polytomously scored items. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of item discrimination, sample size, and proportion of polytomously scored items on item response theory (IRT) kernel equating of mixed-format tests under the equivalent groups design.

Exploring dimensionality of scores for mixed-format tests

2018
<p>Dimensionality assessment provides test developers and users with a better understanding of how test scores make human abilities concrete. Issues dealt with by dimensionality assessment include, but are not restricted to, (a) whether unidimensionality holds; (b) the number of dimensions influencing test ...

The Optimal Design of Bifactor Multidimensional Computerized Adaptive Testing with Mixed-format Items

Applied Psychological Measurement, 2022
Multidimensional computerized adaptive testing (MCAT) using mixed-format items holds great potential for the next-generation assessments. Two critical factors in the mixed-format test design (i.e., the order and proportion of polytomous items) and item selection were addressed in the context of mixed-format bifactor MCAT.

Bi-Factor MIRT Observed-Score Equating for Mixed-Format Tests

Applied Measurement in Education, 2016
ABSTRACTThe main purposes of this study were to develop bi-factor multidimensional item response theory (BF-MIRT) observed-score equating procedures for mixed-format tests and to investigate relative appropriateness of the proposed procedures. Using data from a large-scale testing program, three types of pseudo data sets were formulated: matched ...

The Performance of IRT Model Selection Methods With Mixed-Format Tests

Applied Psychological Measurement, 2012
When tests consist of multiple-choice and constructed-response items, researchers are confronted with the question of which item response theory (IRT) model combination will appropriately represent the data collected from these mixed-format tests. This simulation study examined the performance of six model selection criteria, including the likelihood ...
