Lubrication Science, 2003
AbstractThis paper reviews recent research in mixed lubrication, focusing on the current understanding of lubricant entrainment, and thus film thickness, and of friction in thin‐film, rough‐surface lubricated contacts. By combining research using optical interferometry on the experimental side and numerical modelling on the theoretical side, we now ...

Enhanced Lubricity in Mixed Alkanethiol Monolayers
The Journal of Physical Chemistry B, 2005The frictional properties of two-component mixed alkanethiol monolayers were investigated with frictional force microscopy. With large chain length differences, the two types of molecules segregated into large islands and reveal similar frictional properties as those of single-component monolayers.

Tribological Behavior of Aqueous Copolymer Lubricant in Mixed Lubrication Regime
ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, 2016Although a number of experiments have been attempted to investigate the lubrication of aqueous copolymer lubricant, which is applied widely in metalworking operations, a comprehensive theoretical investigation at atomistic level is still lacking. This study addresses the influence of loading pressure and copolymer concentration on the structural ...

This paper presents a model for mixed lubrication. The surface asperities are represented by short plasto-elastic cylinders with spherical tops. The heights of these cylinders are assumed to have a Gaussian distribution. By combining the solution of the Reynolds equation and the solution from boundary lubrication theory or the microelastohydrodynamic ...

Reduced description of mixed lubrication
Tribology International, 2008Modelling friction and wear between rough and lubricated surfaces is an important problem of modern technologies. The complexity of the problem is in the necessity of simultaneously solving for elastic deformations of contacting bodies and fluid flow between the bodies.

Mixed Lubrication of Strip Rolling
Tribology Transactions, 1994An analytical model for strip rolling operating in the mixed regime is developed. The model combines analysis for the influence of bulk plastic deformation on the effective hardness of the strip asperities with an approach to allow for the influence of roughness on lubricant flow. An approximate correction for thermal effects is also included.

Chemical Films and Mixed Lubrication
A S L E Transactions, 1983This paper relates studies of film behavior in mixed lubrication in a concentrated contact. In the simulator, 52100 steel specimens and TCP in hexadecane as lubricant are used. When the pure EHL regime is studied, no solid film is formed on surfaces, but within the boundary lubrication regime, the chemical decomposition of the additive contributes to a

Friction Reduction in Mixed Lubrication
Tribology Letters, 2007Minimization of frictional losses in the drivetrain of heavy-duty vehicles is important from both consumer satisfaction and environmental perspectives. Approaches to friction reduction in these components can be evaluated using simulation-based investigations.
