Mixing of the Immiscible Liquids in the Entrance Region of a T-Type Chamber Using Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) Method [PDF]

open access: yesIranian Journal of Chemical Engineering, 2016
A Laser Induced Fluorescence technique (LIF) has been used to study the mixing behavior of two emerging streams in a T-Type mixing chamber. A mixing index on the basis of digital image light intensities is calculated.

Influences of chloride immersion on zeta potential and chloride in concentration of cement-based materials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
In this paper, the zeta potential of freshly mixed cement paste and hardened cement pastes, as well as the concentration index, was measured. The influences of chloride concentration in mixing water and slag content on zeta potential of freshly mixed ...

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Deep Mixing and Metallicity: Carbon Depletion in Globular Cluster Giants

open access: yes, 2008
We present the results of an observational study of the efficiency of deep mixing in globular cluster red giants as a function of stellar metallicity. We determine [C/Fe] abundances based on low-resolution spectra taken with the Kast spectrograph on the ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Quantifying aerosol mixing state with entropy and diversity measures [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2013
This paper presents the first quantitative metric for aerosol population mixing state, defined as the distribution of per-particle chemical species composition.

Structures in stratified plane mixing layers and the effects of cross-shear [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
A two-dimensional temporal mixing layer is generated in a stratified tilting tank similar to that used by Thorpe (1968). Extensive flow dynamics visualization is carried out using, for the top and bottom layers, fluids of different densities but of the ...

Four wave mixing in 3C SiC Ring Resonators

open access: yes, 2017
We demonstrate frequency conversion by four wave mixing at telecommunication wavelengths using an integrated platform in 3C SiC. The process was enhanced by high-Q and small modal volume ring resonators, allowing the use of mW-level CW powers to pump the

Neutrino oscillations in the early universe: How large lepton asymmetry can be generated? [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
The lepton asymmetry that could be generated in the early universe through oscillations of active to sterile neutrinos is calculated (almost) analytically for small mixing angles, sin 2\theta < 10^{-2}.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...
