Eddy‐induced mixed layer shallowing and mixed layer/thermocline exchange

Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 2000
The effects of eddies on the mixed layer and on the transfer of properties between the mixed layer and thermocline are studied in a high‐resolution model of an unstable front. A spring scenario is considered, with a mixed layer maintained against surface warming by wind mixing.

Surface mixed and mixing layer depths

Deep Sea Research Part I: Oceanographic Research Papers, 1995
Abstract In order to understand the daily cycle of heat storage within the surface mixed layer it is necessary to distinguish between the mixed layer, the zone of relatively homogeneous water formed by the history of mixing, and the mixing layer, the zone in which mixing is currently active.

Mixing and mixed layer depths in the ocean

2021
The ocean surface boundary layer (OSBL) is one of the largest global regulators of climate. There are two definitions associated with its depth: the mixed layer depth (MLD) and the mixing layer depth (XLD). The former is estimated using vertical profiles of temperature and density, and the latter using measurements of the dissipation rate of turbulent ...
