Weather and climate socio-economic impacts in Central America for the management and protection of world heritage sites and the Diquis Delta culture in Costa Rica (a case study) [PDF]

open access: yesAdvances in Geosciences, 2014
The Central America region hosts a valuable amount of World Heritage Sites (WHS), many of them located in areas of floods, landslides, drought, high winds, intense precipitations, and earthquakes.

The inflow signature toward different evolutionary phases of massive star formation

open access: yes, 2016
We analyzed both HCN J=1-0 and HNC J=1-0 line profiles to study the inflow motions in different evolutionary stages of massive star formation: 54 infrared dark clouds (IRDCs), 69 high-mass protostellar object (HMPOs), and 54 ultra-compact HII regions ...

The oldest known snakes from the Middle Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous provide insights on snake evolution [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The previous oldest known fossil snakes date from ∼100 million year old sediments (Upper Cretaceous) and are both morphologically and phylogenetically diverse, indicating that snakes underwent a much earlier origin and adaptive radiation.

Multiseason Verification of the MM5. Part I: Comparison with the Eta Model over the Central and Eastern United States and Impact of MM5 Resolution

open access: yesWeather and Forecasting, 2003
Abstract This paper describes the multiseason verification of the fifth-generation Pennsylvania State University–National Center for Atmospheric Research Mesoscale Model (MM5) and the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Eta Model over the eastern two-thirds of the United States and surrounding coastal waters during the cool (1 November–

Floodplain environmental change during the younger dryas and holocene: Evidence from the lower kennet valley, south central England [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Many lowland rivers across northwest Europe exhibit broadly similar behavioural responses to glacial-interglacial transitions and landscape development. Difficulties exist in assessing these, largely because the evidence from many rivers remains limited

Lessons from the implementation of the Australian 2016 prostate specific antigen testing clinical practice guidelines: a descriptive study

open access: yesANZ Journal of Surgery, Volume 95, Issue 10, Page 2188-2196, October 2025.
Abstract Introduction In 2025, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in Australia, regardless of gender, and is the second most common cause of cancer death despite the opportunities for cure. In 2016, Australian Clinical Practice Guidelines for Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) testing were published to improve early detection and management of ...

Impact of the Assimilation of Surface Observations on Limited‐Area Forecasts Over Complex Terrain

open access: yesMeteorological Applications, Volume 32, Issue 5, September/October 2025.
This study evaluates the impact of assimilating surface observations with the 3D‐Var algorithm in a WRF‐based weather prediction system over the European Alps. Results show that the assimilation leads to significant improvements in near‐surface temperature and humidity forecasts.

Resolving Crustal and Subcrustal Dynamic Sources in Continental Arc Magmas: The Cenozoic Andean Arc of Central Chile

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, Volume 26, Issue 9, September 2025.
Abstract The Andean margin of Central Chile (∼32°40′–34°30′S) records abundant Cenozoic arc magmatic activity with variable compositional characteristics. This is examined through the analysis of an extensive database of new and published whole‐rock geochemistry and Sr‐Nd isotopic compositions, in addition to zircon Hf and O isotopic compositions.

A study of dispersion in complex terrain under winter conditions using high-resolution mesoscale and Lagrangian particle models [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2006
A mesoscale model (MM5), a dispersive Langrangian particle model (FLEXPART), and intensive meteorological and COrrelation SPECtrometer (COSPEC) measurements from a field campaign are used to examine the advection and turbulent diffusion patterns ...
