“Faking Bad” on the MMPI, MMPI-2, and Millon-II

Using the F-minus- K index for MMPI protocols of 134 psychiatric inpatients and MMPI-2 scores of 35 inpatients, and Millon-II Debasement scores of 105 inpatients shows the prevalence of “faking bad,” thereby reflecting the severity of psychopathology in this hospitalized sample.

Attempts to improve the reliability and validity of MMPI short forms appear warranted in light of their increasing acceptance among clinicians. Moreland (1983) has recently suggested that the most cost-effective way of improving existing MMPI short forms would be to include the entire K scale along with other abbreviated scales.

Validity of the MMPI personality disorder scales (MMPI-PD)

The MMPI Personality Disorder scales, developed by Morey, Waugh, and Blashfield (1985), were validated on an inpatient population by comparing 104 patients' MMPI-PD scores with the MCMI and with DSM-III-R diagnosis. Conservative significance levels were used to ensure more valid conclusions.

Male college students' profiles look more pathological on the adult version of the MMPI than on the adolescent version. In the present study, men showed elevated scores on the F, Pa, and Sc scales on the MMPI-2. In contrast, women's profiles were more normal on the adult version.
