Low-Latency High-Efficiency Mobile Fronthaul With TDM-PON (Mobile-PON)

Journal of Optical Communications and Networking, 2017
To meet the capacity requirements of the exponential increase in mobile traffic and to continue to drive down the per-bit cost for mobile service providers, the cloud radio access network (C-RAN) has become a crucial step toward 5G. However, the current C-RAN architecture has some major drawbacks in terms of scalability, cost, and efficiency.

Linearization of a Radio-over-Fiber mobile fronthaul with feedback loop

2017 26th Wireless and Optical Communication Conference (WOCC), 2017
The main disadvantage of Radio over Fiber (RoF) links digital predistortion (DPD) is that it is necessary to feedback the output signals at the Remote Radio Head (RRH) in a real scenario. Along the literature digital predistortion on RoF mobile fronthaul architectures considers an ideal feedback system, so it cannot be deployed in real systems.

Next Generation Mobile Fronthaul and Midhaul Architectures [Invited]

Journal of Optical Communications and Networking, 2015
Centralized processing is expected to bring about substantial benefits for wireless networks both on the technical side and on the economic side. While this concept is considered an important part of future radio access network architectures, it is more and more recognized that the current approach to fronthauling by employing the Common Public Radio ...

Adjustable Window Based Online Scheduling in Mobile Fronthaul

Asia Communications and Photonics Conference 2021, 2021
We propose an online scheduling scheme with adjustable transmission window in fronthaul. The simulation results show that our scheme improves 22.6% schedulability and 42.7% resource utilization on average than traditional schemes respectively.

A Novel DBA Scheme for TDM-PON based Mobile Fronthaul

Optical Fiber Communication Conference, 2014
We propose a mobile-DBA with low-latency for a TDM-PON based mobile fronthaul. It utilizes mobile-scheduling information and reduces the latency to about 1/20 of conventional one. Measured latencies (< 50 µs) are enough for LTE.

Radio-on-terahertz over fiber system for future mobile fronthauling

2014 IEEE Global Communications Conference, 2014
The technology of encapsulating a microwave signal into a terahertz carrier and an optical signal is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. Broad bandwidth terahertz radio can encapsulate existing microwave services, including advanced mobile communication signals, by using photonics technology.

Mobile Fronthaul Architecture and Technologies: A RAN Equipment Assessment [Invited]

Journal of Optical Communications and Networking, 2017
Optical fiber is the required technology for radio access network (RAN) backhaul and fronthaul. We report on the evolution of RAN equipment, including the advent of virtualization and an investigation of the required architecture and optical access technologies.

Wavelength Resource Sharing in Bidirectional Optical Mobile Fronthaul

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2015
In this paper, we propose high-capacity spectrally-efficient optical mobile fronthaul (MFH) architectures featuring wavelength resource sharing, where multiple cell sites share one dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) channel instead of occupying a number of separated DWDM channels.

DSP-Assisted Channel Aggregation Options for Next-Generation Mobile Fronthauling

2018 20th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON), 2018
In this paper, we perform a performance comparison of two different solutions for next generation mobile fronthauling, both based on digital signal processing (DSP) channel aggregation options, but in the two variants usually indicated as Time Division Multiplexing Access (TDMA) and Frequency Division Multiplexing Access (FDMA).
