Few-mode optical fiber with a simple double-layer core supporting the O + C + L band weakly coupled mode- division multiplexing transmission.

open access: yesOptics Express, 2022
A weakly-coupled few mode fiber (FMF) with a simple double-layer core is designed and fabricated that support five (seven) weakly coupled mode groups with average attenuation of 0.21 dB/km (0.39 dB/km) at the C + L (O) optical wavelength bands.

Three-dimensional mode-division multiplexing system

open access: yesOptics Express, 2023
Blindly increasing the channels of the mode (de)multiplexer on the single-layer chip can cause the device structure to be too complex to optimize. The three-dimensional (3D) mode division multiplexing (MDM) technology is a potential solution to extend the data capacity of the photonic integrated circuit by assembling the simple devices in the 3D space.

Silicon Chip-to-Chip Mode-Division Multiplexing [PDF]

open access: yesOptical Fiber Communication Conference, 2018
A chip-to-chip mode-division multiplexing connection is demonstrated using a pair of multiplexers/demultiplexers fabricated on the silicon-on-insulator platform. Successful mode multiplexing and demultiplexing is experimentally demonstrated, using the LP 01 , LP 11a and LP 11b modes.

Direct-access mode-division multiplexing switch for scalable on-chip multi-mode networks

open access: yesNanophotonics, 2021
By leveraging mode-division multiplexing (MDM), capacity of on-chip photonic interconnects can be scaled up to an unprecedented level. The demand for dynamic control of mode carriers has led to the development of mode-division multiplexing switches (MDMS)

High-Dimensional Modulation for Mode-Division Multiplexing [PDF]

open access: yesOptical Fiber Communication Conference, 2014
We explore high-dimensional modulation for mode-division multiplexed optical fiber communication systems, focusing on optimized 24-D modulation formats in six-mode fiber transmission. Compared with conventional formats, our simulations demonstrate up to 8.7 dB span loss budget improvement for 6 b/s/Hz intra-channel spectral efficiency.
