Despite frogs avoiding low temperatures, examination of four salamander species revealed that none avoided cold and all possessed cold tolerance. Functional analysis of TRPM8, a cold sensor, showed that all salamander TRPM8s had lost their cold sensitivity.

Noise characteristics of a polarization-duplex dual-comb fiber laser based on a single gain fiber
We demonstrate gain-sharing polarization-duplex dual-comb laser. Here, a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) with a single gain fiber is used to achieve simultaneous mode-locking for the generation of the two frequency combs with slightly different ...

Timing jitter optimization of mode-locked Yb-fiber lasers toward the attosecond regime
We demonstrate ultra-low timing jitter optical pulse trains from free- running, 80 MHz repetition rate, mode-locked Yb-fiber lasers. Timing jitter of various mode-locking conditions at close-to-zero intra-cavity dispersion (-0.004 to +0.002 ps2 range at ...

Lessons Learned From a Delayed‐Start Trial of Modafinil for Freezing of Gait in Parkinson's Disease
ABSTRACT Objective Freezing of gait (FOG) in people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD) is debilitating and has limited treatments. Modafinil modulates beta/gamma band activity in the pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN), like PPN deep brain stimulation. We therefore tested the hypothesis that Modafinil would improve FOG in PwPD.

Mode-Locking in Driven Disordered Systems as a Boundary-Value Problem [PDF]
We study mode-locking in disordered media as a boundary-value problem. Focusing on the simplest class of mode-locking models which consists of a single driven overdamped degree-of-freedom, we develop an analytical method to obtain the shape of the Arnol ...

Harmonic mode locking of bound-state solitons fiber laser based on MoS(2) saturable absorber.
We present a kind of harmonic mode locking of bound-state solitons in a fiber laser based on molybdenum disulfide (MoS(2)) saturable absorber (SA). The mode locker is fabricated by depositing MoS(2) nanosheets on a D-shaped fiber (DF). In the fiber laser,

ABSTRACT Objective Status epilepticus (SE) is associated with significant mortality. Sleep architecture may reflect normal brain function. Impaired sleep architecture is associated with poorer outcomes in numerous conditions. Here we investigate the association of sleep architecture in continuous EEG (cEEG) with survival in SE.

Passive mode-locking under higher order effects
The response of a passive mode-locking mechanism, where gain and spectral filtering are saturated with the energy and loss saturated with the power, is examined under the presence of higher order effects.

Theoretical and Experimental Investigations of a Passively Mode-Locked Nd" Glass Laser [PDF]
The presented theoretical model for a mode-locked Nd-glass laser simultaneously takes into account dynamics of the mode-locking dye, amplification saturation and radiation background.
