Photonic Lanterns for Mode Division Multiplexing

Asia Communications and Photonics Conference 2014, 2014
Photonic lanterns have been identified as a suitable technology for MDM. Photonic lanterns are mode converters with low loss, can introduce mode selectivity, can scale to many modes, and are easily integrated with current technologies.

A Field Trial of Mode-Division Multiplexing

2014 IEEE Photonics Society Summer Topical Meeting Series, 2014
We present results of the first field trial ever to include a component of MDM. The demonstrated scenarios all confirm the possibility for a partial upgrade of legacy systems to few-mode technology.

Dynamic channel modeling for mode-division multiplexing

2016 IEEE Photonics Society Summer Topical Meeting Series (SUM), 2016
We propose a dynamic channel model to describe time-varying polarization- and spatial-mode coupling in few-mode fibers caused by fast environmental perturbations. We employ the model to study the tracking performance of adaptive multi-input multi-output equalization algorithms.

Wavelength and polarization division multiplexing using the LP11 mode in a two-mode fiber for mode division multiplexing

SPIE Proceedings, 2011
The orthogonality of Mode Division Multiplexing (MDM) with Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and Polarization Division Multiplexing (PDM) is investigated applying WDM and PDM transmission over the LP11 mode in a few-moded fiber. Two wavelengths, each carrying 10Gbit/s signals in two orthogonal polarizations are successfully transmitted with the ...

Equalizer complexity of mode-division multiplexed coherent receivers

2012 14th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON), 2012
We show that OFDM requires the lowest equalizer complexity for crosstalk compensation in a mode-division-multiplexing receiver. For a 2000-km transmission distance and less than 10% ODFM-specific overhead, the modal dispersion must be below 12 ps ...

Integrated Switch for Mode-Division Multiplexing (MDM) and Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (WDM)

CLEO: 2015, 2015
We demonstrate the first integrated switch for mode-division multiplexing (MDM) and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM). We show on-chip routing of four 10 Gb/s channels with

Few-mode fiber technology for mode division multiplexing

Optical Fiber Technology, 2017
Abstract We review recent progress on few-mode fiber (FMF) technologies for mode-division multiplexing (MDM) transmission. First, we introduce fibers for use without and with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) digital signal processing (DSP) to compensate for modal crosstalk, and briefly report recent work on FMF for use without/with a MIMO DSP ...

Few-mode optical fiber for mode-division multiplexing

Optical Fiber Technology, 2011
Abstract This paper describes the group delay difference and mode coupling of few-mode fiber for “uncoupled” mode division multiplexing. Optical mode separation is compatible with few-mode fiber. It has complementary characteristics with the MIMO technique.

Few-mode fibers for mode division multiplexing transmission

SPIE Proceedings, 2012
A study is presented of the fiber properties needed to achieve 10-mode multiplexing transmission. A combination of MIMO processing with optical LP mode separation is proposed to prevent the need for massive MIMO computation. The impact of mode crosstalk, differential mode delay, and the mode dependent loss of the few-mode fibers on mode multiplexing

Bidirectional mode-division multiplexers with antireflection gratings

Applied Optics, 2018
A bidirectional mode-division multiplexer (BMDM) with antireflection gratings is designed, and its performance in terms of S-parameters is presented. A BMDM can (de)multiplex three modes with only two waveguides and a Bragg grating. The impact of return losses on the performance of BMDMs is studied and antireflection gratings are designed to reduce ...
