ROLE OF FIBER ARCHITECTURE IN MODE- I FRACTURE TOUGHNESS

2023
We present Mode-I fracture toughness studies on architected woven composites to elucidate how the weave architectures dictate crack propagation mechanics.

Mode-I dynamic fracture initiation toughness using torsion load

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2019
Abstract An experimental and numerical approach is proposed to determine the dynamic fracture initiation toughness of materials from a cylindrical specimen with spiral surface crack subjected to dynamic torsional load using a torsional Hopkinson bar apparatus.

Mixed Mode I/II fracture toughness of bonded joints

International Journal of Adhesion and Adhesives, 2002
Mixed Mode I/II fracture experiments are conducted to determine the fracture toughness of a commercial elastomer methacrilate adhesive (Loctite Multibond 330) bonded joints. A compact tension-shear specimen geometry is adopted and the stress intensity factor (SIF) calibration is obtained by the finite element method using a correction factor approach ...

Mixed mode I/III fracture toughness of Armco iron

Acta Materialia, 1998
The slope of the blunting line for Armco iron under mixed mode I/III loading was determined experimentally using stretch zone width measurements. It was found that the experimentally measured blunting line slope was always greater than that predicted by the existing empirical relation.

Combined mode I - mode III fracture toughness of a high carbon steel

Scripta Metallurgica, 1989
Abstract 1. 1. Brittle materials exhibit minimum energy dissipation under pure mode I loading 2. 2. In these materials, the mode IIIcomponent essentially provides redundant plastic work and increases J totalc . 3. 3. This behavior contrasts with more ductile materials where combined mode I - mode III loading produces The minimum ...

A Suggested Procedure for Combined Mode I — Mode III Fracture Toughness Testing

Journal of Testing and Evaluation, 1990
Abstract Mode I fracture toughness testing is well developed and standards exist for determining both Mode I critical stress intensity factors and J integrals. However, combined Mode I — Mode III testing is not so well developed and no standards exist.

Fracture toughness of aged dental composites in combined mode I and mode II loading

Journal of Biomedical Materials Research, 2000
Resin-based laboratory dental composites for prosthetic restorations have been developed in the past years as a cost-effective alternative to conventional porcelain-fused-to-metal or full ceramic restorations. The fracture toughness at different stress states (K(Ic), K(IIc), and mixed-modes K(I), K(II) ) was assessed for three laboratory dental ...

Fracture toughness of polycrystalline tungsten under mode I and mixed mode I/II loading

Materials Science and Engineering: A, 1999
The fracture toughness of swaged polycrystalline tungsten was tested parallel and perpendicular to the swaging direction and under mixed mode I/mode II loading. The fracture mode is dominated by the microstructure and changed from all-transgranular cleavage in mode I to almost all-intergranular fracture in mode II. The mixed mode results can be related

Combined mode I-mode III fracture toughness of a spherodized 1090 steel

Acta Metallurgica et Materialia, 1991
Abstract The aim of this investigation was to determine the fracture behavior of a spherodized 1090 steel under combined mode I-mode III loading conditions. Suitably defined formulations of the J integral denoted Jic and Jiiic were used to characterize the elastic-plastic fracture of this steel.
