Stress intensity factor (SIF) of surface cracks (semi-circular, semi-elliptical, and irregular shapes) located on a circular pipe (hollow) has been determined using numerical method. The irregular-shaped crack geometry was considered in the present work in order to simulate the cracks that are generally developed during service condition.

Near-threshold propagation of mode II and mode III fatigue cracks in ferrite and austenite
Acta Materialia, 2013Abstract The near-threshold behavior of mode II and mode III long fatigue cracks in ferritic (ARMCO iron) and austenitic (X5CrNi18-10) steel were experimentally studied using various samples specially prepared to obtain the effective threshold values ΔKIIeff,th and ΔKIIIeff,th.

K-calibration of special specimens for mode II, III and II+III crack growth
Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2013Abstract An original testing setup has been designed for generating pure remote mode II, III and mixed mode II + III crack propagation in a single cylindrical specimen with circumferential crack. This specimen is currently used for investigations of a shear mode fatigue crack propagation. The aim of this work was to perform the K-calibration of above

Straightforward comparison of fatigue crack growth under modes II and III
International Journal of Fatigue, 2008Low-cycle fatigue crack propagation in double circumferentially notched, cylindrical specimens of austenitic steel was studied by means of special testing device in order to identify local fracture micromechanisms under remote shear modes II and III. Remote mode II crack growth rate was found to be approximately two times higher than that of the mode ...

Abstract The paper is focused on an identification of the local mode II mechanism of fatigue cracks loaded under the remote mode III and the mixed mode II + III and presents a convincing experimental evidence of such a mechanism in materials with a nearly coplanar crack growth.

Threshold and growth mechanism of fatigue cracks under mode II and III loadings
Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures, 2003ABSTRACT The fatigue crack growth behaviour of 0.47% carbon steel was studied under mode II and III loadings. Mode II fatigue crack growth tests were carried out using specially designed double cantilever (DC) type specimens in order to measure the mode II threshold stress intensity factor range, ΔKIIth.

Stress corrosion cracking under modes I, II and III loadings
Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1988Abstract Stress corrosion cracking tests for modes I, II and III were carried out on high tensile strength steel in water or 3.5% salt water. The single edge notched cantilever beam specimen was used for mode I. The circumferentially-notched pipe specimen for mode II and the circumferentially-notched bar specimen for mode III were subjected to ...

Determination of fatigue crack growth characteristics under shear-mode loading is a rather complicated problem. To increase an efficiency and precision of such testing, special specimens enabling simultaneous propagation of shear cracks under II, III and II+III loading modes started to be used rather recently.

Intrinsic Behaviour of Mode II and Mode III Long Fatigue Cracks in Zirconium and the Ti-6Al-4V Alloy
Solid State Phenomena, 2016This work is focused on experimental study of micromechanisms of mode II and mode III fatigue cracks in metallic materials in the near-threshold regime. The resistance to fatigue crack growth can be divided to an intrinsic component (ahead of the crack tip) and an extrinsic component (shielding, closure), which is significantly higher than the ...
