Alcohol-Related End-Stage Liver Disease and Transplantation: The Debate Continues

open access: yes, 1994
Liver transplantation has been an acceptable treatment for end-stage liver disease for many years. The greatest number of patients needing transplantation for survival are those suffering from alcohol-related end-stage liver disease. Throughout the years,

Static and dynamic prognostic factors for hepatitis-B-related acute-on-chronic liver failure [PDF]

open access: yesClinical and Molecular Hepatology, 2015
Background/AimsHepatitis-B-related acute-on-chronic liver failure has a poor prognosis. However, the advent of potent oral antiviral agents means that some patients can now recover with medical treatment.

Modelling stem cell differentiation related processes—A practical overview for biologists

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Stem cell differentiation is complex and difficult to control experimentally. This review introduces suitable computational modelling approaches that can support stem cell research, from mechanistic ODE and abstract models to multiscale and deep learning methods.

An epithelial GPR35 isoform supports tumor‐associated transcriptional and metabolic phenotypes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
GPR35 generates two functionally distinct isoforms with previously unresolved roles. GPR35‐short mediates immune‐cell chemotaxis, while GPR35‐long is enriched in colorectal cancer epithelium, where it supports increased metabolism, proliferation, and tumor‐associated transcriptional programs.

Engineering peptides into antibodies—opportunities and strategies for therapeutic innovation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Peptides and antibodies occupy complementary therapeutic niches. Peptides recognize difficult targets in a compact format, while antibodies add specificity, long half‐life, and effector functions. This review examines strategies that merge both modalities—peptide grafting into loops, terminal and Fc fusions, and bioconjugation—highlighting how ...

Liver organoids: modelling complexity in homeostasis and disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Studying liver in vitro has been challenging because simple 2D cell cultures fail to capture liver's cellular and architectural complexity. To bridge this gap, scientists increasingly use organoids, 3D liver models which better mimic liver composition and function. This review examines recent advances in liver organoid complexity and realism, discusses

Preoperative Nutritional Support in Children with End-Stage Liver-Disease Accepted for Liver-Transplantation - An Approach to Management

open access: yes, 1990
Pre‐operative nutritional support was studied in 28 children with end‐stage liver disease awaiting orthotopic liver transplantation. Nasogastric supplemental administration of a standard semi‐elemental enteral nutritional formula was compared with a ...

Autophagy and mitophagy in pancreatic β‐cell homeostasis and their involvement in diabetes pathophysiology

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review focuses on the role of autophagy and mitophagy in maintaining pancreatic β‐cell function and homeostasis. We discuss how genetic defects affecting these pathways contribute to the development of type 1, type 2, monogenic, and gestational diabetes. We further explore their potential as therapeutic targets. Created in BioRender.

End-stage liver disease as the only consequence of a mitochondrial respiratory chain deficiency: no contra-indication for liver transplantation

open access: yes, 2000
The prerequisite for liver transplantation as a therapeutic option for inherited metabolic diseases should be that the enzyme defect, being responsible for the major clinical (hepatic and/or extra-hepatic) abnormalities, is localised in the liver ...
