This review discusses Eleni Kefala’s book The Conquered, which compares two traumatic events—the fall of Constantinople (1453) and the fall of Tenochtitlan (1521)—through three poetic texts composed after the conquests: the Byzantine lament Anakalema and the Nahua songs Huexotzincayotl and Tlaxcaltecayotl.
