Human land‐use changes the diets of sympatric native and invasive mammal species

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 13, Issue 12, December 2023., 2023
We simultaneously study the diet of nine native and two invasive mammal species inhabiting three different anthropogenic land‐uses across six bioclimatic regions using environmental DNA and stable isotope analysis. We show that land‐use influences the trophic relationships in invaded communities.

Past human‐induced ecological legacies as a driver of modern Amazonian resilience

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 5, Issue 5, Page 1415-1429, October 2023., 2023
Abstract People have modified landscapes throughout the Holocene (the last c. 11,700 years) by modifying soils, burning forests, cultivating and domesticating plants, and directly and indirectly enriched and depleted plant abundances. These activities also took place in Amazonia, which is the largest contiguous piece of rainforest in the world, and for

Global effects of forest modification on herpetofauna communities

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 37, Issue 1, February 2023., 2023
Abstract As the area covered by human‐modified environments grows, it is increasingly important to understand the responses of communities to the novel habitats created, especially for sensitive and threatened taxa. We aimed to improve understanding of the major evolutionary and ecological processes that shape the assemblage of amphibian and reptile ...

Differential nutrient limitation and tree height control leaf physiology, supporting niche partitioning in tropical dipterocarp forests

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 36, Issue 8, Page 2084-2103, August 2022., 2022
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Revealing the mechanisms of environmental niche partitioning within lowland tropical forests is important for understanding the drivers of current species distributions and potential vulnerability to environmental change.

Exposición a químicos disruptores endócrinos obesogénicos y obesidad en niños y jóvenes de origen latino o hispano en Estados Unidos y Latinoamérica: una perspectiva del curso de la vida

open access: yesObesity Reviews, Volume 22, Issue S5, Octubre 2021., 2021

A meta‐analysis of tropical land‐use change effects on the soil microbiome: Emerging patterns and knowledge gaps

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 53, Issue 3, Page 738-752, May 2021., 2021
We identified 83 published paired studies that reported data on microbial biomass, abundance, composition, and enzyme activity under representative land‐use changes in the tropics. We found that microbial biomass, abundance, and functions were affected by land‐use change.

open access: yesCiencias Ambientales, 2020

Successional and native forests predict the occurrence and infection status of Chagas disease vectors in Panama

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 1, January 2026.
Findings here show that successional forest predicts greater kissing bug infestation risk in palm trees, whereas native forest predicts lower kissing bug occurrence but greater infection with T. cruzi. These insights can guide land use planning towards vegetation management practices that help minimize T. cruzi transmission risks for rural communities.

Phylogenomics‐based click‐beetle classification tackles multiple origins of phenotypic modifications

open access: yesSystematic Entomology, Volume 51, Issue 1, January‐March 2026.
Using a concatenated dataset consisting of new genomic data from 73 species across 40 click‐beetle tribes and an earlier published, smaller dataset, we conducted the first 4200‐ortholog study targeting the phylogeny of Elateridae with the highest resolution to date.
