Ultrafiltration and modified ultrafiltration in pediatric open heart operations

The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 1993
The capillary leak associated with cardiopulmonary bypass results in an increase in content of water in the tissues measurable by an increase in total body water after cardiac operation. Following work by Magilligan in the 1970s, ultrafiltration was introduced during bypass as a means of hemoconcentrating patients and potentially removing water from ...

Modified Ultrafiltration in Children

Seminars in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, 2001
Pediatric cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) results in increased total body water and capillary permeability. Ultrafiltration has been effective in removing this excess water. The con ventional method of ultrafiltration is restricted by the vol ume in the venous reservoir and therefore is inefficient in smaller children and neonates, whose blood volume is ...

Venoarterial modified ultrafiltration versus conventional arteriovenous modified ultrafiltration during cardiopulmonary bypass surgery

2022
INTRODUCTION: The role of modified ultrafiltration (MUF) in removing inflammatory mediators, reducing the need for homologous donor blood and decreasing pulmonary vascular resistance after cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) has already been established. Different types of MUF systems evaluated illustrated that none of the MUF techniques adhered to the normal

Techniques of paediatric modified ultrafiltration: 1996 survey results

Perfusion, 1998
In September 1996, perfusionists from 50 paediatric open-heart surgery programmes were contacted to identify centres that are currently using the technique of modified ultrafiltration (MUF). Of the 50 centres contacted, 22 (44%) were utilizing the technique.

Modified Ultrafiltration Reduces Postoperative Morbidity After Cavopulmonary Connection

The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 1997
Modified ultrafiltration reduces the deleterious effects of cardiopulmonary bypass in children. Patients undergoing repair of single-ventricle cardiac anomalies may be particularly sensitive to these adverse effects, and benefit from the use of modified ultrafiltration. From January 1995 to June 1996, 120 consecutive cavopulmonary operations were ...

Modified ultrafiltration membranes for humic acid removal

Journal of the Taiwan Institute of Chemical Engineers, 2014
Abstract Polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration membranes were prepared via phase inversion induced by immersion precipitation with a blending method in different concentrations of two hydrophilic monomers, namely 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid (DBA) and gallic acid (GA).

PMMA Modified PVDF Hollow Fiber Ultrafiltration Membranes

Advanced Materials Research, 2012
Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) modified poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) hollow fiber ultrafiltration membranes were prepared by wet spinning method using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as pore-foaming agent and mixture of dimethyl formamide (DMF)/methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) as solvent.

N-butylamine plasma modifying ultrafiltration polysulfone membranes

Desalination, 2002
Abstract Some properties of ultrafiltration polysulfone membranes modified with n-BuNH2 and n-BuNH2/Ar plasmas were studied. Contact angle measurements, XPS and SEM were used to characterize the surface changes. Pore size estimation, water transport and filtration parameters helped to describe changes in filtration performance.

Surfactant modified ultrafiltration for nitrate ion removal

Journal of Membrane Science, 1997
It is confirmed that small concentrations of cationic surfactant radically modify cellulose acetate membrane properties concerning nitrate ion rejection. This modification is produced by a strong adsorption of surfactant molecules on the membranes which acts on the Donnan potential difference.
