Influence of third harmonic injection on MMC-based HVDC transmission systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Whilst third harmonic injection is extensively used in modular multilevel converter (MMC) control, its significant advantages over sinusoidal modulation have not been fully explored.

Analysis of Subsequent Commutation Failures Caused by Valve‐Side Single‐Phase‐to‐Ground Faults in Hybrid Cascaded HVDC Systems and Corresponding Suppression Measures

open access: yesIET Renewable Power Generation, Volume 20, Issue 1, January/December 2026.
The valve‐side single‐phase‐to‐ground (SPG) fault represents one of the most critical issues affecting the safe operation of hybrid cascade HVDC systems. This paper studies the mechanism of subsequent commutation failure caused by SPG faults on the MMC valve side in hybrid cascade HVDC systems and proposes a suppression measure.

Operation and control of MMCs using cells with power transfer capability [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Cells in conventional Modular Multilevel Converters (MMC) designs use a capacitor for energy storage. This means that the net power balance for each cell (neglecting losses) needs to be equal to zero, the MCC realizing therefore a power transfer between ...

Comprehensive Study of DC Microgrids Protection: Challenges, Cutting‐Edge Techniques, Machine‐Learning‐Driven Solutions

open access: yesIET Renewable Power Generation, Volume 20, Issue 1, January/December 2026.
ABSTRACT This paper provides a comprehensive examination of the evolving protection challenges within DC microgrids powered by renewable resources and energy storage systems. It begins by delineating the methodological framework of conventional protection, critically assessing schemes based on current, voltage, and impedance to expose their limitations

Modulation, control, and performance analysis of asymmetric modular multilevel converter (A‐MMC)

open access: yesIET Power Electronics, 2018
Modular multilevel converters (MMC) have proven to be a viable candidate for high‐voltage direct current transmission systems. Here, asymmetric modular multilevel converters (A‐MMC) are introduced wherein each series connected module has two half‐bridge (HB) submodules, with asymmetric voltage rating.

A Fault Detection Method for Multiterminal Flexible DC Grids Based on Current Transient Energy Rate Ratio

open access: yesInternational Transactions on Electrical Energy Systems, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
To address the challenge of weak fault transient characteristics in multiterminal flexible DC grids caused by transition resistance, DC reactors, and noise interference, which render traditional single‐electrical‐quantity detection methods ineffective, this paper proposes a fault identification scheme for flexible DC transmission systems based on the ...

Grid-connected control strategy of modular multilevel converter–battery energy storage system based on VSG

open access: yesThe Journal of Engineering, 2019
Modular multilevel converter-battery energy storage system (MMC-BESS) has a good engineering application. When MMC-BESS is connected to the grid, the real-time phase angle of grid is an important parameter.

Dimensioning and Modulation Index Selection for the Hybrid Modular Multilevel Converter [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The Hybrid MMC, comprising a mixture of fullbridge and half-bridge sub-modules, provides tolerance to DC faults without compromising the efficiency of the converter to a large extent. The inclusion of full-bridges creates a new freedom over the choice of

Measurement and Analysis of Radiated Disturbance Characteristics of ±320 kV Modular Multilevel Converter System

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2019
The radiated electromagnetic disturbance was evaluated by measuring the electric field intensity in a bandwidth of 10 kHz-2.75 GHz near the valve hall, direct-current (DC) area, reactor room, and transformers in a ±320-kV modular multilevel ...
