Non‐Contact Turn‐Off Time Measurement Method for IGBTs in the Half‐Bridge Submodule Configuration of MMC

open access: yesIET Power Electronics, Volume 19, Issue 1, January/December 2026.
This paper proposes a non‐contact method for measuring the turn‐off time of insulated‐gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) devices in modular multilevel converters (MMC) submodules, using the decay of load‐side common‐mode current. The technique leverages existing current‐sensing infrastructure and avoids intrusive modifications, enabling real‐time ...

Arm balancing control and experimental validation of a grid connected MMC with pulsed DC load [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
This paper focuses on the operation of a grid connected Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) supplying a pulsed DC load. The goal is to achieve minimum AC power fluctuation despite the high power fluctuation present on the DC side.

Hybrid modular multilevel converter (MMC) applications under over-modulation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
The Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) has become a prominent converter topology due to its several advantages: high modularity, high scalability, low harmonic distortion, and high efficiency. In particular, due to its modular structure, it is possible to increase its voltage rating by stacking extra cells. The MMC has been successfully applied to high

An Optimised Independent Arm Modulation Strategy Driven by Energy Balance Mechanism for Circulating Current Suppression in Arm‐Multiplexing Modular Multilevel Converters

open access: yesIET Power Electronics, Volume 19, Issue 1, January/December 2026.
The arm‐multiplexing modular multilevel converter (AM‐MMC) is a lightweight, high‐power‐density topology whose conventional modulation strategies require large circulating currents to maintain energy balance. This paper establishes a time‐domain analytical model of the AM‐MMC energy‐balance mechanism and proposes an optimised independent arm modulation

3D Lumped Thermal Model for Compliant Press‐Pack IGBT Submodule in MMC

open access: yesIET Power Electronics, Volume 19, Issue 1, January/December 2026.
We present a 3D lumped thermal model for compliant press‐pack IGBT submodules in MMCs. The model accounts for double‐sided cooling and thermal coupling, achieving high accuracy and efficiency, making it suitable for real‐time condition monitoring. ABSTRACT The compliant press‐pack IGBT is widely used in modular multilevel converters (MMCs).

Robust and generic control of full-bridge modular multilevel converter high-voltage DC transmission systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
This paper presents the theoretical basis of the control strategy that allows the cell capacitor voltage regulation of the full-bridge modular multilevel converter (FB-MMC) to be controlled independent of its dc link voltage.

A Novel Modular Cascaded Topology for High‐Voltage Battery Energy Storage and Solar Photovoltaic Systems

open access: yesIET Renewable Power Generation, Volume 20, Issue 1, January/December 2026.
Battery storage systems are limited to using a lot of parallel‐connected cells due to their insulation limits. In this paper, we propose a cascade‐based topology for energy storage systems and PVs, whose main advantage a lot of cells in series can be connected, obtaining higher operation voltages and reduced currents.
