A New Test Method for the Determination of the Flexural Modulus of Spirally Wound Paper Tubes

Journal of Engineering Materials and Technology, 1992
A new static test method to determine the flexural modulus of spirally wound paper tubes is described. The experimental method is based on the standard three-point-bend procedure. The method requires testing the tube at multiple (two or more) span lengths.

Correlation between macro- and nano-scopic measurements of carbon nanostructured paper elastic modulus

Applied Physics Letters, 2015
Extensive work has been done in order to determine the bulk elastic modulus of isotropic samples from force curves acquired with atomic force microscopy. However, new challenges are encountered given the development of new materials constructed of one-dimensional anisotropic building blocks, such as carbon nanostructured paper.

Model for the Moisture Quenching of Solid-Matrix Phosphorescence via the Young's Modulus of Filter Paper

Applied Spectroscopy, 1995
Experimental Young's modulus values were obtained as a function of adsorbed moisture content for filter paper samples with no absorbed salt and with several different types of salt adsorbed on filter paper. The Young's modulus values were correlated with the room-temperature phosphorescence intensities and room-temperature phosphorescence lifetimes of ...

Elastic modulus of nanomaterials: resonant contact-AFM measurement and reduced-size effects (Invited Paper)

SPIE Proceedings, 2005
Resonant contact atomic force microscopy (resonant C-AFM) is used to quantitatively measure the elastic modulus of polymer nanotubes and metallic nanowires. To achieve this, an oscillating electric field is applied between the sample holder and the microscope head to excite the oscillation of the cantilever in contact with the nanostructures suspended ...

Realizing Ultrahigh Modulus and High Strength of Macroscopic Graphene Oxide Papers Through Crosslinking of Mussel‐Inspired Polymers

Advanced Materials, 2013
Covalently crosslinked graphene oxide papers (GOPs) with enhanced mechanical properties are prepared by a strategy involving crosslinking by means of intercalated polymers. The strength and modulus of the crosslinked GOPs increase by 115% and 550%, respectively, compared to the pristine GOPs. These results broaden the potential applications of graphene,

Paper IX (i) Young's modulus of Tin and Tic coatings

1990
This paper presents an experimental technique which allows the determination of the Young's modulus of thin films deposited on comparatively thick substrates. It is based on the measurement of the flexural resonance frequency of a vibrating composite sample.

Study of Modulus of Elasticity of Concrete with Partial Replacement of Cement by Hypo Sludge Waste from Paper Industry

Global Journal For Research Analysis, 2012
Paper mill sludge is a major economic and environmental problem for the paper and board industry. The material is a by-product of the de-inking and re-pulping of paper. The million tonnes quantity of paper mill sludge produced in the world. The main recycling and disposal routes for paper sludge are land-spreading as agricultural fertiliser, producing ...

Paper IX (ii) A method for in situ determination of Young's modulus of deposits

1990
The substrate Young's modulus is identified by using the first natural flexural frequency of a rectangular sample. The simulation of the “free-free” boundary conditions makes the reproductibility of the experimental conditions possible. Taking the geometrical irregularities, mainly the thickness variations, into consideration when interpreting the ...

Comments on the paper `A study of the errors due to shear and rotatory inertia in the determination of Young's modulus by flexural vibrations'

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 1968
A method of deducing Young's modulus of isotropic materials from flexural resonant frequencies which was suggested in a recent paper by D. Hardie and R. N. Parkins may lead to errors of up to 10%. The use of tabulated correction factors is shown to be a more satisfactory method of treating the experimental results, leading to values accurate to better ...

Grade verification of SA pine - bending, modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, tension and compression: scientific paper

2004
The last verification of SA pine timber strengths was done in the early 1980s. Uses of the pine logs and the rotation periods have changed. This investigation was undertaken to verify the visual grade 5 grading rules of SANS 1783-2 (1997) on 36 x 111 mm specimen sizes. Qualified timber graders identified forestry areas with low-density SA pine.
