Chromosomes of Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae (10 males and 20 females) collected from a tributary of the Tiete River (Botucatu, S.P. Brazil) were examined using kidney and testicular cells. Both males and females presented 2n=50 chromosomes and 1 to 8 small supernumerary microchromosomes.

Cranial skeletogenesis and osteology of the redeye tetra Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae
Journal of Fish Biology, 2012The skeletogenesis and osteology of the syncranium of the redeye tetra Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae is described. Skeletal development is rapid, with many elements of the chondrocranium and splanchnocranium well formed prior to the onset of ossification.

Early ontogeny of aquarium-raised Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae (Characiformes: Characidae)
Ichthyological Research, 2011The ontogeny of the characiform fish Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae, from early embryogenesis through the early larval period, is presented. Fertilized eggs were slightly elliptical, measured 0.6 mm in diameter, and were surrounded by a fertilization envelope 0.8 mm in diameter.
