Moisturizers have been adapted to perform many important roles on the skin surface. Simple moisturizers combine occlusives and humectants to enhance the water-holding capacity of the skin. The addition of carefully selected emollients can influence the esthetic properties of the moisturizer and the stability of the active ingredients.

ABSTRACT Dry skin, or xerosis, is one of the most common skin conditions for which patients seek medical advice. This article summarizes the importance of maintaining moisture in the skin and discusses the biological mechanisms for moisture preservation and the functional components present in topical moisturizers.
