Mycobacterial cell division arrest and smooth‐to‐rough envelope transition using CRISPRi‐mediated genetic repression systems

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
CRISPRI‐mediated gene silencing and phenotypic exploration in nontuberculous mycobacteria. In this Research Protocol, we describe approaches to control, monitor, and quantitatively assess CRISPRI‐mediated gene silencing in M. smegmatis and M. abscessus model organisms.

The Role of Cyclones in Moisture Transport into the Arctic

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2021
AbstractIn this study, ERA5 reanalysis is used to quantify cyclone‐induced moisture transport into the Arctic on a seasonal basis (1998–2018). Moist airstreams are spatially identified and temporally linked to individual cyclones (50–90°N). Results show that cyclones account for 74% of the annual poleward flux across 70°N.

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Moisture transport over the brick/mortar interface [PDF]

open access: yes, 1995
The moisture transport in brick, mortar that was cured separately, and combined brick/mortar samples was studied using NMR. The experimental results show that the mortar is less permeable if it is cured bonded to the brick instead of cured separately ...

Unravelling the transport of moisture into the Saharan Air Layer using passive tracers and isotopes

open access: yesAtmospheric Science Letters, 2023
The subtropical free troposphere plays a critical role in the radiative balance of the Earth. However, the complex interactions controlling moisture in this sensitive region and, in particular, the relative importance of long‐range transport compared to ...

Numerical Simulation on Temperature and Moisture Fields Around Cooling Towers Used in Mine Ventilation System

open access: yesFluids, 2022
For heat rejection, small air-cooling towers are widely used in mine ventilation systems. However, the thermal efficiency of the cooling towers can be significantly affected by their geometrical arrangement and crosswind conditions.

Sudden anaerobization in Amphibacillus xylanus increases intracellular labile ferrous iron and inhibits cell growth

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Abruptly changing from aerobic to anaerobic conditions (sudden anaerobization) induced growth inhibition and a significant increase in intracellular labile ferrous iron in the aerotolerant anaerobe Amphibacillus xylanus. We found that free flavins mediate efficient electron transfer from NADH to ferric iron under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that ...
