Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

A case study on using district heating network flexibility for thermal load shifting

open access: yesEnergy Reports, 2021
In district heating (DH) systems, the time of use of energy is becoming more important. For example, the use of sustainable baseload units over peak units is favored. Also heat production units coupled to the electricity grid, such as cogeneration plants

Microstructural strain energy of α-uranium determined by calorimetry and neutron diffractometry [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
The microstructural contribution to the heat capacity of α-uranium was determined by measuring the heat-capacity difference between polycrystalline and single-crystal samples from 77 to 320 K.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Generalized numerical RKM method for solving sixth-order fractional partial differential equations

open access: yesNonlinear Engineering
Fractional partial differential equations (FPDEs) are used as tools in the mathematical modeling of the natural phenomena and interpretation of many life problems in the fields of engineering and applied science.

Alternative air–liquid interface method for inhalation toxicity testing of a petroleum-derived substance

open access: yesMethodsX, 2020
In vitro-based new approach methodologies (NAMs) provide a pragmatic solution to animal testing of petroleum substances and their constituents. A previous study exposed an in vitro model (A549 cells) at the air–liquid interface (ALI) to assess inhalation

Exploring Pt-Pd Alloy Nanoparticle Cluster Formation through Conventional Sizing Techniques and Single-Particle Inductively Coupled Plasma—Sector Field Mass Spectrometry

open access: yesNanomaterials, 2023
Accurate characterization of Pt-Pd alloy nanoparticle clusters (NCs) is crucial for understanding their synthesis using Gas-Diffusion Electrocrystallization (GDEx).

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Evaluation of Microbial Load, Formation of Odorous Metabolites and Lipid Stability during Wet Preservation of Nannochloropsis gaditana Concentrates

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2020
Wet preservation of algae allows us to bridge the time period between algae harvest and processing while avoiding the costs and nutritional losses associated with algae drying.
