یکی­از معمّاهای ناگشودۀ مثنوی معنوی، بحث تمامی یا ناتما­می­آن در حیات مولاناست. عدّه‌ای بر این باورند که کهولت سن، بیماری و رحلت مولانا موجب شد تا مثنوی، خاصّه، آخرین قصۀ آن؛یعنی قصۀ ذات­الصّور، ناتمام باقی بماند­. برخی نیز معتقدند که مولانا سال­ها پیش از آنکه از دار دنیا برود مثنوی را به پایان رسانده بود و هیچ بحثی را ناتمام با­قی نگذا­شت.
